Welcome, Jack Frost!

The first freeze of winter brings warmth to our hearts.

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire,

Jack frost nipping at your nose.

from The Christmas Song

Jack Frost came to call in secret last night,

For the world awakes dressed sparkling in white.

The cardinal, stark red against snowy plain,

Comes tapping, singing at the windowpane.

_

Peanut butter bird feeders made at school

Help us keep winter's golden rule.

Swaying in the fur trees, inviting,

Our hungry feathered friends, delighting.

_

Kids wake with joyful squeals and laughs,

Make thumbprint fairies on frosted glass.

The dogs close behind them roll and leap,

Frosting their fur like mountain sheep.

_

Out come fluffy blankets from the bottom drawer!

Popping corn -- butter drizzled fingers reach for more!

Let's hang the biggest pot over the fire!

Hot chocolate warms, beckoning with sweet desire.

_

"Is Santa coming?" the littles cry and croon.

I smile, "Not for a few more weeks, but soon."

Steaming mugs kiss rosy cheeks, eyes all aglow.

I whisper, "Thank you Jack, for winter's first snow."

This feels very festive and wintery, and I particularly liked "stark red against snowy plain"- it's such a simple contrast, but works so well when you think about a little red bird surrounded by white everywhere. Nicely done Holly:)
