Sky-ku Challenge Winners

A behind-the-scenes glimpse at the Vocal Curation Team’s top picks from the Sky-ku Challenge.

By Vocal Curation TeamPublished about a year ago 2 min read

We apologize for the slight delay in announcing the winners—some of our team got a little too inspired by the changing skies and caught the seasonal sniffles. But we’re back and thrilled to share the poetic treasures you’ve crafted.

In our Revisited series, we invited you to look up and find inspiration in the vast expanse above us. The prompt was simple yet boundless:

“Write a haiku about something in the sky.”

Your “something” could be anything—from natural phenomena like a flash of lightning to a soaring baseball. We asked you to use the traditional 5-7-5 syllable structure and craft a haiku that captures a singular moment or feeling, evoking a sense of wonder. Though brief, these three lines were to be vivid enough to bring the sky down to earth for your readers.

We were thrilled to receive so many creative and heartfelt haikus that truly soared. It’s now time to announce the winners of this poetic journey.

🏆 Grand Prize Winner: “The Wild Geese” by Natalie Wilkinson

A beautifully woven metaphor that captures the fleeting yet impactful passage of geese across the sky, leaving a lasting impression on the heart.

🥈 Second Place: “Sunrise Spills” by E.K. Daniels

An evocative portrayal of dawn that encapsulates the promise and gentle encouragement of a new day.

🎖️ Runners-up (in no particular order):

“there goes the sun” by Morgana Miller

A vivid depiction of sunset’s transition, rich with alliteration and imagery.

“Snoop” by Katarzyna Popiel

A contemplative piece that personifies the moon and invites introspection.

“Awe-Striking Aurora” by Ryan Burkey

Captures the mesmerizing beauty of the Northern Lights with dynamic imagery.

“Resurgence, or, Little White Nosed Brown Bat” by Sam Spinelli

A poignant reflection on the disappearance of bats, blending nostalgia and concern.

“Haiku: Skylines” by Tyler C Clark

A thought-provoking commentary on urbanization reaching into the sky.

“Paper Bag in the Sky Haiku” by Marie381Uk George’s Girl

A simple yet evocative scene symbolizing freedom and release.

“Shimmer” by Dana Crandell

An alliterative portrayal of celestial lights offering a sense of guardianship.

“Moon” by Zivah Avraham

Expresses a yearning for the solace found in the darkness of stormy nights.

“What Light Remembers” by Tiffany Harris

A powerful depiction of a lightning storm capturing a moment of shared emotion.

“When Moon Steals the Spotlight” by Natacha Pierre
