Anderson wins in Louisville
Commonwealth College Opener has third meet
Defending SWAC indoor and outdoor triple jump champion Savoria Anderson of Prairie View continued her winning ways in the triple jump as she opened the new indoor season at the Commonwealth College Opener, Dec. 7, in Louisville Kentucky.
Anderson described it as, "a great season opener," as she prepared to leave the track after a busy day that also saw her compete in the 60-meter hurdles and 1,6oo-meter relay. Anderson topped a field of eight competitors with a mark of 12.33 meters. It was the best indoor season opening mark of her career, including last year when she placed second at the Commonwealth College Opener at 11.77 meters.
This was the third Commonwealth College Opener. The first two years, national powers such as Texas, Kentucky, Stanford and host Louisville have used the meet as a tune-up for what's to come during the intense indoor season. This year, Prairie View in its second year in the meet, and Lipscomb in its third, were the biggest programs as teams such as Northern Kentucky, West Virginia State, Tusculum, Bellarmine among others worked to keep pace and get their seasons off to strong starts.
Lipscomb's Bella Jackson was another winner at the meet. She took first in the high jump for the second time in three years. The three-time east regional qualifier cleared the mark at 1.77 meters, jumping over five previous heights without a miss. Jackson was in a class by herself at the meet and is looking to add more hardware to her collection. She has won two high jump championships and three silver medals over her career in Atlantic Sun Conference Championships competition.
Perhaps the biggest show stealer of the meet was Jahzara Hart of Tusculum. She began the meet in the 60 meters semi-final where she ran her first race for her school. Hart previously competed for Indian Hills Community College where she was a junior college All-American sprinter. Her last collegiate race was during the 2023 outdoor season. After her first heat in a Tusculum uniform, Hart became the school record-holder in the 60 meters at 7.45 seconds.
Hart was far from done as she broke that record during the final round with a time of 7.37 seconds as she won the 60 meters. Just when you thought Hart would be satisfied with her accomplishments, she took yet another record. The Raleigh, North Carolina native became the Tusculum record holder in the 200 meters as well at 24.42 seconds. When the opening week of indoor action closed, she ranked first among all NCAA Division II sprinters in the 60 meters and sixth in the 200 meters.
Another notable performer was Prairie View's Sanai Kintchen who is the reigning SWAC pentathlon champion. Kintchen started things off with a second-place effort in the 60-meter hurdles. She ran a personal best 8.59 seconds in the final round. She followed that with a win in the long jump with a mark of 5.51 meters. To go along with her pentathlon win in 2024, she also earned a silver medal in the heptathlon at the SWAC outdoor meet.
Prairie View also shined in the 400 meters, as Jasir Miller won at 57.39 and the shot-put saw Krislyn Green win at 13.91 meters.
