If you're tired of the same old weekend trips and want something wild, offbeat, and completely soul-stirring, it’s time you meet the Netravati Trek. This hidden gem in the Western Ghats of Karnataka is perfect for those who crave unfiltered nature, remote trails, and a sense of accomplishment that can’t be found on touristy routes.

Unlike popular treks like Kudremukh or Mullayanagiri, Netravati Peak remains blissfully untouched. It's not a beginner-friendly picnic; it's raw, intense, and rewarding in the most humbling way. And that’s exactly why it’s worth doing.

Where Is Netravati Peak and Why Is It Special?

The Netravati Peak trek begins in the charming village of Samse, in the Chikmagalur district, close to Kudremukh National Park. Don’t let the name confuse you with the Netravati River—this is a high-altitude grassland trek through some of the most pristine wilderness in the Ghats.

What sets it apart?

Untouched beauty: Very few commercial groups venture here.

Diverse terrain: From thick rainforests to high-altitude grasslands.

Unmatched views: On clear days, you can see layers of blue-green hills stretching for miles.

It’s like walking inside a postcard.

Best Time to Trek Netravati Peak

If you want a mix of good weather and great views, aim for October to February. The skies are clearer, the forests are lush post-monsoon, and the trail isn’t too slippery.

The monsoon season (June to September) brings a magical vibe with fog, mist, and gushing streams—but it also brings leeches, tough terrain, and tricky weather. Ideal only if you're an experienced trekker and up for the challenge.

Getting There: Route from Bangalore

Reaching the base is an adventure in itself:

By Road (Best Option): Bangalore → Hassan → Chikmagalur → Kalasa → Samse (approx. 320 km, 7–8 hours by car or bus).

By Bus: KSRTC buses run overnight to Kalasa. From there, local jeeps take you to Samse or the forest entry point.

By Train/Air: Nearest major station and airport is Mangalore (110–120 km away), with good road connectivity.

Pro Tip: Start your journey on Friday night to make the most of your weekend.

The Trek: A Journey Through the Heart of Nature

The Netravati trek spans around 12–14 km round trip, and typically takes 5–6 hours, depending on your pace and weather conditions. It's classified as moderate to difficult, mainly due to the steep climbs and remote location.

1. Entry Point and Permits

You’ll begin from Balagal check-post near Samse. Trekking here requires:

Forest department permission

A registered local guide (compulsory)

Permits usually include an entry fee and are arranged by homestays or local trek operators.

2. Into the Jungle

The trail kicks off with dense forest cover. It’s cool, humid, and buzzing with forest life. Sunlight barely breaks through the canopy, and the earthy scent of wet leaves fills the air. You’ll hop over roots, cross little streams, and spot wild mushrooms, butterflies, and maybe a monkey or two.

3. Grasslands & Ridge Walks

Suddenly, you’ll emerge into the classic rolling grasslands that define this region. This part of the trek feels surreal—like walking on clouds. The narrow ridge trails are surrounded by steep drops and expansive views. Weather can turn misty in minutes, wrapping the hills in white, dreamlike layers.

4. Reaching the Summit

After a final steep climb, you’ll reach Netravati Peak. It’s not marked by any signboard or flag, but you’ll know you’re there by the sheer quiet and the breathtaking panorama. Rest here. Soak it all in. This is what you came for.

Where to Stay and What to Eat

Your best option is to stay in Samse or Kalasa. Local homestays offer warm hospitality, great food, and help with trek logistics.

Some good ones:

Thirumale Homestay (basic but great location)

Mugilu Homestay

Bhagavathi Nature Camp (near Kudremukh, if you plan to explore more)

Meals are usually simple and local—think hot rice, sambhar, chutneys, seasonal veggies, and endless cups of filter coffee.

Local Tips & Practical Advice

Wear full sleeves and trek pants – leeches are common, especially in or after monsoon.

Carry at least 2L water, energy snacks, and electrolyte powder.

Mobile signal is weak or nonexistent. Inform family before you go off-grid.

Hire a local guide – they not only keep you safe but also add insight into the terrain and forest life.

Start early – most treks begin by 8 AM and end by 3 PM to avoid forest restrictions.

Also, respect the environment—don’t litter, and don’t play loud music in the forest.

Sample Weekend Itinerary

Day 0 (Friday Night):

Leave Bangalore by car/bus around 10 PM.

Day 1 (Saturday):

Reach Kalasa/Samse by 7–8 AM

Freshen up, have breakfast at homestay

Start trek by 9:30 AM

Summit and return by 3 PM

Enjoy bonfire and dinner at the homestay

Day 2 (Sunday):

Explore Hanuman Gundi Falls or a local coffee estate

Head back to Bangalore by 2 PM

Reach home by 9–10 PM

Perfect weekend reset!

Why Netravati is Worth It

There are treks, and then there are experiences that stay with you long after the muscle soreness fades. The Netravati Trek falls into the latter.

It’s not a casual trail. It demands effort, respect, and presence—but gives back solitude, wild beauty, and inner peace in return. If you're someone who prefers starry skies to city lights and the sound of wind over honking traffic, this trek will feel like a long-overdue conversation with nature.
