i just rewatched Election, more villanelle of regret antidote; sometimes the soul needs a dark comedy with an antihero, and Election’s metahumor feeds me what I need. The tropes are bearable because they’re intentional; the way this movie makes fun of itself charms me with it’s cleverness.
It stars Matthew Broderick and Reese Witherspoon with Chris Klein costarring. If you’re unfamiliar, it’s centered around a high school election and the Student Council advisor (Broderick) in his personal life. Witherspoon plays Tracy Flick, an overachiever, while Klein is the star football player dumb jock everyone loves.
I truly don’t want to give away any of the plot, as it’s one of the most sarcastic films I’ve seen. Cleanth Brooks wouldn’t want me to disturb this well-wrought urn by dismantling it. It’s predictable, but in such a tongue-in-cheek fashion that it doesn’t matter; it’s the delivery that I enjoy. It’s also intentionally campy and over-the-top. If you want a deep, dark laugh at cliches and and an oblivious antihero, makes some popcorn and enjoy. Currently free on Amazon Prime, trailer below.
