Some People Give Me the Spooks

A Childhood Tale of Monsters and Vampires

Another creation brought to you by 10-year-old Sandy

This is the second instalment in my series of childhood stories brought back to life.

You can check out my first story here.

I think I was about 10 when I wrote this, though it’s hard to tell my exact age. The last story was typed on a computer, but this one is handwritten, so it might have been before we got our first computer.

In the first story I posted, I mentioned that all the illustrations were very basic. I think I upped my game a little with the illustrations in this one. I'd worked out how to use crayons and add some colour. Still, I think the writing is where it's at for me.

This story has been edited for minor spelling and grammatical errors, but it remains as close to the original as possible. You will notice most of the original quirks remain unchanged to preserve the charm and authenticity of my childhood writing.

Some People Give Me the Spooks

When it was Christmas day, I went to my Grandma and Grandad's house. My Grandad is a good Grandad. He gives me sweets when I wish. My Grandma is a sweet lady and nice.

One night when I was asleep, my Grandad knocked on the door.

A voice said, "Open the door."

I said, "Who are you?"

"Your Grandad."

"I will open the door in a sec."

I opened the door, and then I ran under my bed, so scared to see that my Grandad had turned into a skeleton.

And he grew big white teeth.

Then he grew big shaggy fur.

Then he grew big red eyes.

And then he said, "I'm the shaggiest monster you've ever seen."

Obviously, the shaggiest monster you've ever seen

"You're not the shaggiest monster I've ever seen."

Then he turned into a chimpanzee and said, "You do not speak to me like that."

Then he turned into a ghost and said, "And now I'm a little ghost and I will cuddle you."

"Yuk!" I said.

He said, "Now is the time I've been waiting for, I'm going to bust (sic) you with a pin."

And he did.

But then I said, "I will bust you. I'll be back in a minute."

I got a sheet from my bed, I cut two eye holes and drew a mouth. When I went back into the bedroom, he was so scared that he jumped out of the window and ran away, and never came back again.

Part Two

I was very proud of myself until!

One night when I was fast asleep, someone knocked on my door.

I said, "Who is it?"

"It is your Grandma."

"Come in, come in," I said, but I did not notice she had turned into a vampire.

I said, "You look stupid in that vampire suit. Grandma, what happened to the sweets you used to give me whenever I wished?"

"Alright, I'll give you your sweets."

And she gave me a bag of nothing.

She said, "I'm going to scare you."

"No, you're not. I scared Grandad, so I can scare you!"

Then she grew big, sharp teeth and sharp claws.

"Did you notice I've turned into a Tiger?"

"Stop talking!"

I went to make a papier-mâché dinosaur. Then I said, "I've got a dinosaur for you." And she screamed and ran away, and never came back again.

My artistic interpretation of Grandma the tiger

Part Three

The next night when I was watching The NeverEnding Story, Mum said, "You had better go to bed now."

I said, "Yes Mum."

When I turned off the light, I heard a knock on the door.

I said, "Who is it?"

"It's your Mum,"

"Come in."

"You forgot to turn the TV off."

"No, I didn't."

"You forgot to do your homework."

"No, I didn't"

"I am your mother. I know what you did, and did not do. So, go and turn off the TV, and go and do your homework."

I looked at my homework book and I had done everything. I thought I got rid of her. But, at that moment, I remembered the first trick. I went and got the sheet with the eyes cut out and put it on.

My Mum screamed and ran away.

The end

An AI-generated reenactment of the moment Grandad decided the window was the fastest way out.

HA! You were one imaginative youngster, weren't you? This was a fun read. I actually got more involved with this than I thought. "Okay, this is going to be cute." It was but had a plot and a lot of twists and turns. Impressive for that age. Congrats on your TS!

    - a sweet side roast for 10 year old Sandy 0 even though she/you used crayons this time… still the writing was where it’s at - grandad with the sweets always gets us 🥰 0 damn, I thought grandad was safe from little Sandy's imagination - 🤣 the cuddles aren’t so sweet 0 grandma the tiger actually looked pretty good ♥️♥️ this was really funny, little Sandy hated to be given orders, so she sacred them all away. Grandma, grandad and mom. That’s the smartest thing I’ve read in a while ♥️🤗
