"Whispers in the Moonlight"

A One Sided Love Story

By Waqas AshrafPublished about a year ago 2 min read

Elena had always been a dreamer, her heart woven with threads of poetry and unspoken desires. She lived in a small, picturesque town nestled between rolling hills and a sparkling river, where the air smelled of wildflowers and the nights were painted with stars. But amidst the beauty of her surroundings, her heart belonged to one person—Liam.

Liam was the kind of person who seemed to carry the sun with him wherever he went. His laughter was infectious, his smile could light up the darkest room, and his eyes held a warmth that made Elena feel like she was home. They had been friends for years, sharing secrets, dreams, and countless moments that felt like they were stolen from a fairy tale. But for Elena, their friendship was both a blessing and a curse.

She had fallen for him quietly, like the first leaf of autumn drifting to the ground. It happened so gradually that she didn’t even realize it until it was too late. Every glance, every word, every shared silence became a treasure she hoarded in the depths of her heart. She memorized the way his voice softened when he spoke to her, the way his eyes crinkled when he laughed, and the way he absentmindedly ran his fingers through his hair when he was deep in thought.

But Liam never noticed. To him, Elena was his best friend—his confidante, his partner in crime, the person he could always count on. He told her about his crushes, his heartbreaks, and his dreams, never once realizing that the girl who listened so intently was silently breaking inside. Elena smiled through it all, burying her feelings beneath layers of laughter and lighthearted banter. She couldn’t risk losing him, not even for the chance of something more.

One summer evening, as the golden hues of sunset painted the sky, they sat by the riverbank, their feet dangling in the cool water. Liam was talking animatedly about a girl he had met at the café in town, his eyes sparkling with excitement. Elena listened, her heart aching with every word. She wanted to be happy for him, to cheer him on as she always did, but the weight of her unspoken love felt heavier than ever.

“You should tell her how you feel,” Elena said softly, her voice barely above a whisper. She forced a smile, hoping it would mask the storm raging inside her.

Liam grinned, oblivious to the pain in her eyes. “Yeah, maybe I will. Thanks, Elena. You always know what to say.”

As the stars began to dot the night sky, Elena leaned back on her hands, gazing up at the moon. She wondered if it knew her secret, if it could hear the silent prayers she whispered into the night. She loved Liam with every fiber of her being, but she knew her love would always be one-sided. And so, she made a promise to herself—to cherish the moments they had, to be the friend he needed, and to keep her heartache hidden beneath the surface.

Because sometimes, love isn’t about being together. Sometimes, it’s about watching the person you love be happy, even if it’s not with you. And for Elena, that was enough.

The End.
