Starlight
The mountain air is cool, and dusk is settling in. The late fall sun has set. The leaves on the ground rustle restlessly as small animals come out for the night, disturbing the dried leaves that still retain some of their red and orange hues. A few leaves still cling determinedly to the trees, but they are in the minority.

Bloom
The marsh stinks of rot and old magic, smothered beneath the fresh scent of spring. The smell is familiar, and though some may find it unpleasant, I find comfort in it. The day is bleak: the sky grey, the grasses bleached of colour, the waters dark and opaque. Almost—I see something large swish beneath the surface, and I’m careful to step away from the edge. I know what things lurk here.

Adjusting
Cold air breezes into my home through the window I’ve opened. I savour it; it smells fresh, damp, earthy. Birds have begun to chirp, sensing the coming day. The sky has barely begun to lighten, but what little light there is glistens off the dew clinging to the blades of grass.

Solace
I can’t stand another day out here. I’m exhausted. I’m feel like I'm losing my mind. There is no reprieve from the unbearable heat, but if I concentrate, I can almost remember the crisp air of nighttime. Stars shining above me, a cool breeze, the smell of rain. It all feels like a lifetime ago.
