Maya had been carrying the box for three weeks when her sister finally asked about it. “What’s in there?” Elena said, nodding toward the shoebox tucked under Maya’s arm as they walked through the hospital corridor. It was the same box Maya brought to every chemotherapy session, every doctor’s appointment, every sleepless night spent researching clinical trials at 3 AM.

Even if I hadn’t been washing dishes, I wouldn’t have answered. It rang six times before going to voicemail. I didn’t listen. I watched the voice to text crawl across the screen.

The Therapist Says I’m Doing Great
The therapist says I’m doing great. She says it with her eyebrows up, like she’s impressed. I guess that’s progress. Last year I cried so hard I gave myself a nosebleed in her office and bled into my mask. We both pretended that was normal.
