The Lies We Tell
Many people ask why I didn't notice the signs at first. Because, to me, there were no signs. Instead, they were validation, reasons to continue on. What do I know? I am sitting here, waiting to see him. Again. I was dressed in a fashionable yet appropriate pants suit. I had to borrow it from my friend. I would never have anything this nice. I should definitely invest. My mind always wanders when I'm under stress. I waited to see him; he should walk into the room anytime. The room. The courtroom. I was in the courtroom, awaiting the trial of my husband. Or do I refer to him as my ex-husband now? I shuddered at the thought. There is no way that there is actually a trial for my husband. Or ex-husband. The same man I had been married to for seven years. This couldn't actually be happening. The judge banged his gavel as my mind continued on my pity party.

Lately I’ve been invested in going down rabbit holes of Vocal and finding amazing stories that tend to be missed on the Top Story page. Here are some I have found that just not only make me smile but deserve some more recognition then they received! As writers on here it can be hard to feel seen and recognized for the work we are putting out; and I would like to fill in that gap just a millimeter. This is not going to be an exhaustive list of all the stories I’ve liked that week, but I am trying to make sure I engage the community more and provide some value. I recommend to anyone here to do the same because in the words of Kid Rock “You get what you put in”!

Writing is a privilege
I have been a writer for as long as I can remember. Whether it was writing my letters repeatedly in kindergarten, my diary entries that are too embarrassing to read again, or even now. My thoughts on paper (or on a screen) are more than I ever thought capable of myself. I have revealed parts of myself I could only say in a mirror or to a therapist when I write. I have told the Vocal community about my emotional abuse by an ex and my weight issues. I have read about people's issues and their dreams. Our words are our connection, and we can use them for good or bad. Thankfully, here on Vocal, it's the latter. We are privileged beyond any doubt to be where we are in time.

I'm technically Obese.
Let's start with talking about the unreasonable expectations of society. When I say unjustified expectations of the community, I mean the ones we think culture imposes on women. In many ways, we say that it's others who, on the whole, are trying to get us to change, but more often, we are making those judgments ourselves for their sake. I don't think other people think about others as often as we think they do. That being said, I have recently been battling some health concerns, and one of those concerns is obesity.

An Open letter. Content Warning.
You probably don't want to hear from me; I don't want to hear from you. However, I had some words in my heart that I knew had to be let free. Words that I can't hold in anymore, nor do I want to try. We had so much going for us; there was friendship and genuine love. There was an openness that I had felt with others, but thought was new with you. Some fights always made me think I would lose you, so I clung when we fought, scared to let go, thinking you'd go.
