Romantic Sushi
A soft shimmer flares from a single candle which compliments the profound brown hue of his pupils. Two pints of frothy beers arrive, instantly staining the white tablecloth with a wet rim as they are placed before us. The waitress is dressed in a crisp, black, neatly-tucked dress shirt, and a thick velvet tie. She relays that she will return to take our order.

I first heard Shakira in 1995 while accompanying my mother as she ran some errands. Sitting in the backseat of the car, I took interest in a song which began to play on the radio. The musical style of the song was familiar; similar to the songstress aesthetic of the 90's crafted by artists such as Joan Osborne, Alanis Morissette, and Jewel. However, the voice was not familiar whatsoever. What was more surprising is that she was singing in Spanish.

For Muxes, Every Month Is Pride Month. Top Story - June 2019.
In Mexico, down in the southern state of Oaxaca, muxes, pronounced MOO-shays, celebrate and honor their LGBTQ+ identities during and beyond Pride Month, and have done so since pre-colonial times. Assigned male at birth, muxes are distinctively identified as a 'third gender' amongst the Zapotec indigenous communities of Oaxaca. Muxes not only embody female physical traits and attributes, they assume familial and communal roles and responsibilities typically reserved for those assigned female at birth.

A Folder Called 'A Promise'
There is a folder on my computer that I dreaded opening. I avoided eye contact with it like one does when you see an old acquaintance at the grocery store, and take great strides to steer clear of them, acting as if you were too preoccupied reading the ingredients on the box of macaroni shells to pay them any attention. Or how one refrains from verifying the available balance in your checking account after a frivolous weekend.
