How NOT to Travel in Chicago
When I was in bookselling the month of May meant BEA- that's the Book Expo America. Pre-COVID is was held exclusively in New York City, but there was a time it floated between NYC, LA, and Chicago. The year after I moved to Michigan it was in Chicago and I was excited to attend.

We Move in the Direction That We Face
When I was 15 my boyfriend told me I was beautiful. I believed him. When I looked into the mirror I saw a pretty girl looking back at me. When I was 16 my parents told me I was fat. I believed them. When I looked into the mirror I saw a fat girl. The pretty girl was gone. I must have eaten her.

Bedroom Problems
We have bedroom problems just like any other couple. Someone wants it but the other person isn't willing (or able) to give. That leaves the other person out in the cold, forcing them to do without or manage things on their own. Sometimes I'm the problem. Sometimes it's my husband.

The Day I Almost Burned Down the Mall
I almost burnt down the Monroeville Mall in Pennsylvania. Not on purpose, mind you; it was all due to the vacuum... and the part-time evening bookseller.

I Walk the Line
I've never learned to ride a bike. I can't roller-skate, let alone inline skate. Just my thinking of being on a skateboard just made every doctor in a ten-mile radius cringe and they don't even know why. I learned to drive when I was thirty.

Well, If You Want My Opinion...
I met someone last year that described herself as 'the Oprah of her generation'. This evidenced a tremendous amount of confidence, especially as her message was still in progress and her generation was largely unaware that she existed. Still; I understand the urge to share your knowledge and experience with those around you.

Time To See and Be Seen
When my girls were school-age I was the mama-taxi. Long trips seemed to be my specialty. Not just because driving was novel to me (I learned when I was 30... long story), but because they needed to go to places that were some distance away and I was the only parent willing to do the trip (longer story).

C'mon Baby Light My Fire
After 24 years of marriage I found myself alone and perplexed at the very thought of dating. No way. I hadn't dated since I was 19 years old. Where does an adult go on a date? What would I wear? Talk about? How do you kiss new people?
