I teach undergraduate Ethics of Communication and graduate Crisis Communication courses and never experience shortage of real-life cases to discuss with my students on any ethics topic we cover in class. This week, as we started to discuss ethics of mass communication and ethical crisis media strategies, life brought me a special "gift": Will Smith slapping Chris Rock during the 94th Academy Awards ceremony.

Missing The School Bus
“Mom, mom, mom! Wake up!” Alyssa heard her little daughter’s rushed voice through the sweet sleep of early morning hours. Not sure if it's a dream or reality, Alyssa did not respond. Then came a gentle push on her shoulder, followed by a harder one, "Mom, wake up, pleeeease!"

Murderville Review
A combination of an absurdly good murder story, comedy and improvisation? Yes, please! I absolutely loved the new series on Netflix with Will Arnett as a senior homicide detective named Terry Seattle who is supposed to solve a murder in every episode with a new partner, a celebrity playing him- or herself. While the show actors have a blueprint for the story, character parameters, and pre-written lines, the celebrities have absolutely no idea of what is about to happen. As true partners to the detective, they interrogate and observe three murder suspects. The episode always starts out with some sort of a test for a new trainee in the form of questions, where Terry and his new partner are supposed to bond. Then they go and investigate the murder. At the end of the episode, they are supposed to solve the case by naming the murderer, usually in a game-show revealing and suspenseful manner, and explain how they arrived at that conclusion. Then Chief Rhonda Jenkins-Seattle (who is also Detective Seattle's estranged wife) comes out and tells whether the celebrity guessed right or wrong, also in a comically suspenseful way with close-ups and dramatic pauses, and explains how the murder was really committed. Throughout the show, the detective and celebrity are fed certain clues that just like in a good murder mystery are supposed to lead the detectives to the right conclusion.

Crying and Praying for Ukraine
I'm Russian. Russian American, to be exact, and I am conflicted and broken. I have not slept much this week because the megalomaniac paranoid president of Russia, my second home country, invaded the country my grandparents' ancestors came from - Ukraine.

Inventing Anna
I somehow skipped the adventures of real Anna Sorokin aka Delvey in New York when they first were reported by the Vanity Fair and New York magazines. I do not know how the entire media circus of her trial, with all her glitzy dresses and messy hair in court, escaped me. But I am finally caught up, both on “Inventing Anna” Netflix show and the interviews to ABC’s 20/20 and Australian 60 Minutes Anna gave in the short period of time she was between prisons. And I’m still in shock and bewilderment about how people in America can be taken in by the charms of another Russian female con artist (the previous two being infamous spies Anna Chapman and Maria Butina, who were deported back to Russia, returned as heroes and became media darlings in their homeland).

Natural Yarns for Knitting
I have been knitting for over 40 years of my life and knitting is my solace and passion. Recently, I have discovered and worked with some of the rarest and highest quality natural yarns on earth, so I feel it's time to create a ranking system for myself and those who might be interested in this type of information. I will start with the most desirable and highly valued yarns that I hunt for on Etsy as they are usually more expensive on other sites.

The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window
I love Kristen Bell. I love her for acting in "Veronica Mars," "The Good Place," and "Bad Moms," for singing in the "Frozen" movies, and for promoting women's and girls' issues on "Armchair Expert" podcast. I would watch anything with her, so when Netflix automatically cued "The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window" after the series finale of "After Life" that made me cry, I thought it would be a good distraction from the emotional wreck that Ricky Gervais made me into with the ending of his show.

Conversation Finishers
In communication studies and skill-building workshops, we often talk about conversation starters – questions that help us warm up to strangers, make it easier to get to know each other. Some people call it chit chat, some others – water-cooler interactions, yet others – icebreakers. They make disclosing personal information easy because they are non-threatening and fun. At the same time, you can find shared interests and establish understanding with such interactions. These questions include, "What's your favorite movie?", "What are you reading recently?", "Have you seen that sports game yesterday?" etc.
