Movie Review: 'Belfast' Pleasant and Charming
I am trying to figure out why I am so indifferent to Belfast. Perhaps indifferent isn’t the right word. I just didn’t connect with Belfast on an emotional level. I can appreciate the skillful creation of the movie, the delicate performances, the strong evocation of place and time, but something remains remote for me. I don’t feel the deep emotional connection to these characters and this story that I assume I am supposed to feel. But why?

Movie Review: 'Tick Tick Boom' is a Glorious Explosion of Love and Musical Theater
Tick Tick Boom stars Andrew Garfield in the role of Broadway composer Jonathan Larson. Best known as the creator of the Broadway smash Rent, Larson died a tragically young death just before Rent arrived on Broadway and became a cultural phenomenon. Tick Tick Boom was the name of a rock n roll monologue stage show that Larson created and performed before Rent but after his dream of a Broadway musical called Superbia crashed and burned before he could ever take it on stage.

Movie Review: 'Double Walker' is a Smart, Scary Take on Murder Mystery and Revenge
Double Walker is a trippy take on a murder mystery with the victim as the investigator and avenging angel. Sylvie Mix stars in Double Walker as The Ghost. We never learn her name and our introduction to The Ghost defies expectations. As the story begins, a man is in a park with his dog. The dog runs off into a nearby forest and finds a young woman hiding in the forest. She’s wearing only a long white t-shirt and she doesn’t speak.

Movie Reviews: 'Eternals' Inspires Indifference . Top Story - November 2021.
I don’t hate Eternals. I don’t love Eternals either. I’m ambivalent to Eternals which is perhaps more damning than a negative review. At least a negative review would be memorable. I’m several days from my viewing of Eternals and I am having to use spoiler websites to try and recall parts of the movie. Eternals is exceptionally competent and perhaps the best movie that could be made with this script and this cast. But still, the reaction is mostly… blah.

Movie Review: 'Red Notice'
What a waste. Netflix spent $200 million dollars to make the new action comedy Red Notice and they might just as easily have lit $200 million dollars on fire and they would have achieved the same level of artistic success. Red Notice is a dreary throwback to bloated, excessive, action comedies of the past. This derivative and needless action comedy wastes three terrific stars who are completely on auto-pilot as they enact the same kind of humor that has drowned the American comedy throughout this young century.

Movie Review: That Wes Anderson Magic is Back in 'The French Dispatch'
The French Dispatch is a series of quirky stories from the master of quirky stories, Wes Anderson. These stories originate from The French Dispatch, the off-shoot of a newspaper in Kansas that was specifically created and headquartered in the town of Ennui, France. If you’re wondering why a newspaper in the state of Kansas has an office in a little known city in France, perhaps the whimsy of The French Dispatch is not for you. Such questions about such things have no place in the fanciful universe of The French Dispatch.

Movie Review: Kristen Stewart Oscar Worthy in Brilliant, Beautiful Princess Diana Biopic Spencer
If I may start out with an unexpected comparison, the film that the new Princess Diana biopic, Spencer, reminded me the most of was another movie released in 2021. Earlier this year, writer-director Emma Seligman’s debut feature Shiva Baby was released to some acclaim. That was a movie about a young Jewish woman caught up in a storm of emotional conflicts as she’s forced to attend a family gathering, in this case, a funeral wake, or in the Jewish tradition, Shiva.

Movie Review: Tom Hanks Trains a Robot to Take Care of a Dog in Finch
Finch is an overly familiar and rather limp attempt at futuristic, environmental dystopia. The film stars Tom Hanks as the title character, Finch, one of the last living humans on Earth, apparently. We don’t see many other people, others we briefly see are in the midst of being murdered. Finch manages his life by applying his engineering genius to create an enclave to hide in and a means to search for needed resources, or what’s left of those resources.

Top 5 Terrific Uses of Visual Storytelling in the Horror Movie 'Antlers'
Everyday of your life you are processing information whether you realize it or not. Whether it is something as simple as recognizing a hot surface through the context clues of heat rising from the surface or touching that surface and feeling the heat. That’s often something you can do without giving it much thought. This applies to processing visual information such as recognizing a vehicle stopped in the road and needing to stop your car to avoid an accident. These are complex in terms of the macro scale of everything that has built to this immediate situation but it is also mundane in how often you’ve done this and how you don’t linger in thoughts about doing these things.

Documentary Review: 'Artificial Gamer'
Several years ago a group of programmers, under the direction of Greg Brockman, set themselves a remarkable goal. Brockman’s initiative was to create an artificial intelligence that could not only compete with some of the best gamers in the world but could be capable of learning to defeat the greatest players in the world. The game Brockman chose for his project is one that has become the most lucrative and exciting in professional gaming, DOTA 2.
