Young “Love" Stories By Past Me
January 19, 2026: I think I was around my early or mid-20s when I wrote this. I’ve decided to not edit it. Thinking about past memories as I read my old writing is a weird experience. I just turned 33 years old a few days ago. I’ve grown so much since I wrote this. I would still like to have that true love, however my main focus is on myself and getting my life right. I hope you enjoy reading this.

What I DESCRIBE About Korea
My interest in Korea has grown so much over the past few years. I can admit, I do have some concerns and questions as far as traveling there. But we can look at that another time. For some reason, it’s strange to me that my research into Korea grew from just one song (How I Became a Kmusic Fan?) It was “POP/STARS by K/DA”. I started listening to that after hearing someone using it as background music for their YouTube video. Let me tell you, I played that song WAY too many times, over and over. Because of this, Spotify started recommending Korean artists to listen to. Through that I found some of my favorite artists like PH1, ATEEZ, Eric Nam, JUNNY, Gsoul, JAMIE, Moon Sujin, SuperM, Chung Ha, KARD, NCT, AleXa, ITZY, just to name a few. I started watching Kpop music videos. I love that each group has individual concepts, themes, storylines, and the visual effects plus editing blew my mind. I’ll be going to an ATEEZ concert in November of 2022! This will be my first ever Kpop concert! I’m so excited about my first real Kpop experience. ATEEZ has become my ultimate group for a while now. They are just beyond talented and I really like their personalities.

Too Much, but Not Enough
Some will have an issue with us enjoying anything that is not "for Black people”. In my experience, you’re “too Black” for NonBlack folks but “not Black enough” for Black people. This can be such a chore and damaging to your mental health. Some of us just want to enjoy something without having to think about the color of our skin or deal with attacks from racists. Regardless of our feelings and trying to just live our lives, we still end up being “stuck between a rock and a hard place”.

Monster with 21 Faces
Katsuhisa Ezaki, President of Glico (Creator of Pocky), was bathing in the bathroom when two armed masked men kidnapped him and took him to a warehouse in Ibaraki, Osaka. Before finding Ezaki, they had tied up his mother, wife, and eldest daughter. When the wife offered them money, they said, “Be quiet. Money is irrelevant." Despite saying this, they demanded one billion yen, almost eleven million in today’s dollars, and 220 pounds of gold bullion. This was the largest ransom ever demanded in Japan. The kidnappers called themselves, “The Monster with 21 Faces”. Ezaki escaped three days later and the ransom wasn’t paid. The criminals didn’t seem to care about the money though. What did they really want?

How I Became a Kmusic Fan?
As a 28-year-old who's new to all this, how did I get into Kmusic? I didn’t become interested in it until I heard this song playing in the background of a YouTube animation in 2019. The song had some English lyrics so I googled those. The song was called “POP/STARS” by K/DA. I then searched and found it on Spotify. Let me tell you, I played that song WAY too many times, over and over. After that, Spotify started recommending Korean artists to listen to. It was at that moment, I found SuperM. Their first mini-album wasn’t released yet. So I watched all the trailers/teasers on YouTube. (First Impression/Reaction to these coming soon) I practiced learning the members’ names as well. All of this was so new to me but I wanted to get their names right. Their individual video concepts and visual effects/editing blew my mind. Korean music videos have so much going on. It makes me want to re-watch the videos again and again. Jopping came out a few days later and it was my jam for weeks. I loved the choreography, their vocals, styling, visual effects; pretty much everything. The whole video attacked and slapped me in the face. Unfortunately, I’ve never been to a Kpop concert. I hope to go to one after Covid is over. I really want it to be SuperM or SHINee/Taemin concert. Because of SuperM, I have found other K-artists/groups to listen to.
