Suddenly It's Christmas

Halloween is over and Suddenly It’s Christmas . I have created a playlist mirroring this that you can listen to here.

This was inspired by the Loudon Wainwright III’s song (Rufus and Martha’s dad) which I have led in with , so here are some notes on this non Christmas Christmas playlist.

There is one song that I have not included in the actual playlist because it is very sweary and definitely not for children. I have listed it at the end but only go there if you are not easily offended and have a gutter level sense of humour like I have.

Loudon Wainwright III - Suddenly It’s Christmas

This is the one that kicked this off. Stating the obvious , that Christmas , driven by retail power is seeping back as far as September and really has nothing to do with peace and goodwill to all men, but more about squeezing every last penny out of consumers, but it is clever and funny like all these songs are.

Loudon Wainwright III - Christmas Morning

Loudon moves to a Christmas morning scenario talking about presents and selfishness in another humorous manner, but some serious observations in a comedic setting.

Holly Golightly - Christmas Tree’s On Fire

Another comic scenario warning that you need to put your Christmas Tree out (if it’s a real one) or else there may be dire consequences involving a conflagration. It is from the album “A Damaged Christmas Gift For You” parodying Phile Spector’s excellent “A Christmas Gift For You”. Remember Phil Spector was responsible for so wonderful music but is a loathsome individual.

Frank Kelly - The Twelve Days Of Christmas

A very amusing recitation from Frank Kelly (Father Jack from Father Ted) , seemingly away from the drink , with ever escalating vet’s bills , the mother needing Valium and whisky , and it is a work of genius.

Grandaddy - Alan Parsons In A Winter Wonderland

This is just so surreal but beautifully so. I loved this the first time I heard it , but the reaction is a bit odd. It's beautiful but brings a smile to your face and that is nothing but good. It is a pastiche of the classic “Winter Wonderland” which appeared by Darlene Love on the aforementioned “A Christmas Gift For You” album.

Malcolm McLaren and Alison Limerick - Magic's Back (Theme From 'The Ghosts Of Oxford Street')

This is the theme from the amazing “Ghosts of Oxford Street” which you can watch on All4 here if you have access. Another brilliant tangential jump from the media enfant terrible Malcolm McLaren , an amazing tune but if you can watch the film , it has a veritable cornucopia of amazing music from the likes of the Happy Mondays, Sinead O’Connor and the Happy Mondays.

Jona Lewie - Stop The Cavalry

I have always loved this protest song from Jona Lewie , poignant , lovely and also , in my humble opinion , very Christmassy.

TV Smith - Xmas Bloody Xmas

This is a beautiful song with the same sentiments and Loudon Wainwright III’s opener and is another from the album “A Damaged Christmas Gift For You” and this will close my playlist.

Kevin Bloody Wilson - Hey Santa Claus

I find this very funny , you may not. It’s about two ungrateful children berating Santa Clause because they didn’t get what they asked for. Peppered with four letter words (Kevin Bloody Wilson is Australian - not sure if that explains it) you can listen to it here but it may require you to be over eighteen to listen to it.

So that is my alternative Christmas playlist. I hope you enjoy it and maybe have discovered some new music that you actually like.
