Prince, for the Uninitiated, OR 'The Origins of Being an Obsessive Prince-Fan!'
In Art class one morning, one of the cool kids put on a Prince tape, not knowing that this small act would shape my music preferences for life. Art was a double period on a Friday, and it was unlike any of the other classes, for one you could play music, and for two the teachers treated you like equals, they were really cool mannnn. One teacher in particular Alison (you could call them by their first names wow!) I even unintentionally got into some bother, she’d shared with me that one of the other teachers had bought a video recorder and she’d found his lack of know-how in using it particularly humorous. She’d asked us not to mention it to anyone, but of course we teased him on it and he was completely perplexed at how we knew this piece of what he thought was confidential detail. When we relayed to Alison how funny it was that Mr Blake was mystified, she felt guilty and then felt the need to explain to Mr Blake that she’d told us about his video, and then I think she may have regretted trusting her class of 14 year olds after all, but it didn’t seem to change anything in Art… Art remained the home of creativity, where anything went, you could be a human being, you didn’t even have to wear your school tie.

It was voted #283 on Rolling Stone’s “The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time”. The single features a picture of Robert Smith’s Wife Mary on it. This song is haunting. “I have been looking so long at these pictures of you. I almost believed they were real. I have been looking so long at these pictures of you. The pictures are all I can feel.”

This song was written by Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe and was released twice as a single. The song was inspired by T.S. Eliot’s poem “The Waste Land” which is about the struggles of inner-city living. This song reached number one in the UK in 1985, and number one in the US in 1986. This song also won best single at the Brit Awards in 1987.

Gospel Sampled
I am a child of the Golden Age of Hip Hop, which most would argue is the late 80s and early 90s. Many believe this time represents the golden age due to the evolution of lyrical content and delivery. Additionally, the musical styles and the artists that used them became more diverse. Another significant factor was the upgraded use of sampling. My favorite production team during this time was The Bomb Squad comprised of Hank Shocklee, Keith Shocklee, Chuck D. and Eric Sadler. This team powered the sound of Public Enemy, Ice Cube, and many others. They were one of the first to utilize multiple samples in a song. This is the period that I fell in love with Hip Hop.

Google defines a "know it all" as someone who behaves as though they know everything. Alessia Cara must identify as such in some form because this is the title of her debut album. She didn't always consider herself a "know it all" though. It was her mother her pushed her to pursue music as her career. She didn't even really like to sing publicly until her mother would make her sing for visitors until she was bitten by the song-writing bug.
