About this challenge
The Prompt
Write a story set in a world where a well-known myth exists that focuses on a detail the myth simplifies, ignores, or distorts.
Myths survive by smoothing their edges. They condense events, clarify motives, and resolve contradictions so the story can be easily carried forward.
This challenge asks you to work against that compression. Set your story inside a familiar myth, but direct your attention to what has been simplified, overlooked, or misrepresented. A minor character, an implausible action, a consequence that never quite fits. The power of the piece should come from specificity, not correction.
Focus on a part of the myth that feels incomplete or imprecise, and let the story form around it.
In order for your submission to qualify, it must be:
- A fiction story.
- Between 600 and 3,000 words.
- Submitted to the Fiction community. Your story will be disqualified if it is submitted to any other community.
- Submitted before March 13, 2026 at 11:59 PM EST.
- Your work must be original and unpublished.
The Prizes
- 5 Winners: $200 each
- 15 Runners-up: $15 each
- 10 Honorable Mentions: $5 each
