Fiction
Bird, tree, snow
I’ve been at the café for an hour or so – I was way early and had already finished my coffee and an egg on toast. I don’t mind waiting…I’ve got my notebook and am busy making lists, thinking about writing, staring out the window into the snowy street and the storefronts beyond that. More snow is on its way, but I’m not too worried. I moved up here specifically for the weather and I enjoy it- the cold, brisk air, the snowflakes like fluff that melt on my hat or gloves. I love hiking through the woods, my boots crunching through crisp snow while I watch for birds hidden in the thickets or up in the denuded trees. And I love the way the white covers and muffles the tawdry evidence of modern life and commerce - gravel parking lots, shabby storefronts, abandoned gas stations; it never ceases to make me smile when I see the way dead grass and pot-holed roads are smoothed and gentled by a shining white blanket of fresh snow.

The Haunting Echoes of Reality
The manor stood imposingly against the backdrop of the stormy night, its ivy-clad walls whispering tales of mystery and intrigue. Inside, a group of guests gathered around the roaring fire, seeking refuge from the tempest outside. Among them was Miss Amelia Montgomery, a sharp-eyed woman with a penchant for solving puzzles.

The Whole
This was originally published in the Fiction community for Mackenzie Davis' Ekphrastic Challenge using the above photo by Oneg in the Arctic. But then I decided there was more of the story to tell, so I'm moving it to chapters, soon to be followed by chapter 2. If you've already read this, feel free to skip right over to the next chapter "Aegenwulf" (which means "wolf of the chief sea").

Two Words to Fall in Love
“Darling, I’m going to make you fall in love with me,” he says with so much confidence I’m almost falling at his feet. I defiantly place my hands on my hips, pulling myself together. “You don’t stand a chance.” I turn with so much vigour I’m sure my hair swipes across his face.

Cats Gone Wild
“Benjamin, your life can change unexpectedly, so make the most out of your life.” That’s what my mom would usually say to me. My mom would always give me advice because that’s the caring mother she was. She would usually tell me that I should enjoy my youth while it lasts because my younger years will pass by quickly. Well I’m just 10 years old, but now I feel like my younger years have passed because everything I did with my mom is now just memories.

The Colors of Odds and Ends
Of course Carl was out the door first. The summer shower passed in the night but left the dew heavy on the grass. The morning sun sparkled with the possibilities of the day to the point of blinding Carl as he walked to the train station. The conversation he shared last night with Charlie and Rudy was short and the more he remembered it, the fact kept playing in his head that he was so tired at the end of the day, he couldn’t put his head around what the two of them needed. Instead he talked of his wants for them.

The Colors of Odds and Ends
Every night at midnight, the purple clouds came out to dance with the blushing sky. The dimples deepened as the sky turned slowly with the stars, their light falling soft as padded feet. Their dancing, just a breeze on top the trees waiting for the siblings to tire, end each summer night, and go to bed. Both were up past their bedtimes. Though for this summer, no curfew had been placed on them and nothing pressed to get them up in the morning.

Weapon V
Alan, Jack, and Bill stared dumbfounded at the now silent phone, while an occasional large piece of concrete from the decimated building across the way fell to the ground, shattering itself into small chunks. The wail of sirens and the shouts from the injured and those attempting to rescue them filled the area surrounding the embassy. Chaos reigned. Without speaking, Alan motioned for his associates to place their phones on the desk and follow him to the SKIF. Once the three were securely inside and the door sealed, they were free to develop a plan of action.
