He crawled through the living room like a dying animal, eyes closed and his forehead brushing the floor. With each step, he felt as if a hammer was splitting his head open. There was no pain left to distract him. The voice grew louder, turning into a constant and maddening screech.

The whisper returned. Mariano brought his hands to his neck and began to scratch. Was vodka no longer getting him drunk? Could you become an alcoholic in a week? Mariano knew he could. He heard the voice more clearly now. His nails dug into his flesh like the claws of a wild animal. Blood stained his fingers and dripped onto his chest. The voice reached an unbearable volume.

Mariano settled in front of the computer to investigate the content of the memory. His eyes widened disproportionately, and his body hunched until his face almost touched the monitor. There was a video file. Mariano's fear was reflected in the slow movement of the mouse pointer toward the file icon. Biting his lip to gather courage, he double-clicked. The video played in full screen.

He pressed his ear to the vase; he pressed it literally because he felt the rough surface against his ear. And, with some delicacy, he shook it up and down. Nothing. Not even a simple rattle. What if there's another message inside? A message in a bottle, very original. He placed it on the table. The inside of the vase was protected by a simple wooden stopper. Mariano held it by the neck and gripped the cork with the help of his index finger and thumb.

The package didn't seem strange at all. It was a simple cardboard box. Just like the previous one. The only difference was the logo from some kind of foreign sweets he had never seen or tasted in his life; normal, considering where it came from; Belgrade, Serbia. But from the moment he cut the packing tape with a knife, things got a little strange.

Basic Training
Note: I wrote this opening chapter as part of a challenge with a separate online page. I wondered if I would win by entering into the mind of a drill sergeant dealing with new recruits and introducing them to their weapon. The language is very rough, as it has always been with military training. It is necessary for the mentality that the average soldier will need for facing combat and the possibility of death.
