Mr. Rape Torture Kill

A man calling himself Mr. Rape Torture Kill spent 21 years in a psychiatric hospital after his wife discovered sexually disturbing letters he’d written saying he wanted to molest and kill a young boy and turned them over to the police. Shortly after his release from the hospital, Mr. RTK contacted the mother of the then 7-year-old victim that sent him away all those years ago with a disturbing message “I’m back.”

After a man calling himself, “Mr. Rape Torture Kill” was released from a California psychiatric hospital where he spent 21 years, he began sending messages on Facebook to the mother of his then 7-year-old victim. Phoenix police arrested Cary Jay Smith in February 2022 after the mother called the police regarding the messages.

Smith messaged Lynn Rinner on Facebook saying nothing more than “I’m back.” Rinner did not respond to the 10 messages Smith sent to her over the span of a week.

Smith Committed to Psychiatric Hospital

In 1999, Smith was civilly committed to a California psychiatric hospital after his wife turned in a letter she found in which her husband graphically described fantasies involving Rinner’s then 7-year-old son. The descriptive letters detailed his desire to sexually assault and murder the body.

Determined incompetent to stand trial, Smith was sent to the state hospital where the parole board met every six months to determine if he was well enough for release.

Smith Says He’ll Molest Again

During those meetings, Smith continually described his sexual fantasies of raping young boys- including Rinner’s son. He claimed to have molested more than 200 young boys and murdered three others.

At one hearing, Smith told the board, “If you dont cut off my penis and hands, I will molest again.”

Despite this, the parole board determined Smith was no longer a threat to children or society and released him from the psychiatric hospital in 2020.

Rinner said of Smith’s release:

“It’s frustrating that he’s never been criminally convicted of anything and he more than deserves it. But the system has kept a back door approach to keep him locked up,” she said.

Smith Relocates to Phoenix

Smith remained in California after his release but only for a short time. Public outcry and pressure from area demonstrators caused him to move to Phoenix, Arizona. Rinner organized several demonstrations and protests both before and after his release.

Upset over Rinner’s posts on social media about him, he created an email account and Facebook account so he could send her the messages. Smith sent 10 messages over the course of one week.

Smith wanted Rinner to think that he was back in Costa Mesa in order to cause her fear. He sent the messages from his home in Phoenix.

Smith -diagnosed with schizophrenia, pedophilic disorder, and sexual sadism disorder- was convicted of a misdemeanor sexual assault offense in 1984. He was required to register as a sex offender at this time. In 2005, however, this requirement was relinquished and Smith was no longer required to register.

Smith Charged With Failure to Register as a Sex Offender

After his 2020 release from the psychiatric hospital, officials required Smith to again register as a sex offender. Phoenix police charged him with failure to register as a sex offender after Rinner reported receiving the messages.
