Captured
It was about 2am and I was about to end my shift at the local diner. I live in a pretty small town where nothing exciting ever happens. My name is Lucy and I live in a small, ratty, old cabin at the edge of the town surrounded by all the trees. It’s the dead of winter and I’m struggling to keep all of the bills on top of each other. My parents disappeared when I was only 16, leaving me to care for my 5-year-old sister, Everly, by myself.

The Talent Spotter
Total Eclipse of The Heart is playing and I tense up. Fucking hate this. Here I am riding shotgun in an Uber, gliding through the streets of downtown Washington, listening to the guy driving this Lexus going on about the Nationals’ chance this year and that comes on low in the background. Why do I hate it so much? Because of a prophesy. A prophecy that I will die with that as my soundtrack. So I’m talking to him, trying not to piss on his fire too much because as a Cubs fan I know all about disappointment but also worried we’re about to get T-boned by a truck or something. It doesn’t happen. My skin crawls anyway.

Skipping School Was A Bad Idea
Finn stood in the men's restroom of Crestwood High. He had bruises on his face and had already started to swell. Hell, his nose was bleeding too. He could barely see out of his right eye, and the burning tears that streamed out only made the swelling worse. He was a small guy as it is, so there was really no chance in him winning that fight. He had been anticipating this fight with Darrel for a while but he didn't think it would really happen. Darrell and a few of his friends had caught him on the way to the library between classes and jumped him in a janitorial closet. He was too scared to tell anybody since the school was pretty corrupted anyway. Who would believe him? He sniffled softly as he dabbed wet 1-ply tissue on his face to try to combat the swelling, gazing in the mirror. He started to sob at the image in the glass and hung over the sink, his aching back and shoulders flinching from his sniffles and sob. Tears and blood dripped into the sink. He was physically and emotionally hurt. It would be even worse if someone came in but he really had nowhere else to go for privacy.
