The Underground Messiah
THE UNDERGROUND MESSIAH By Jerec Velez In a large, dark cave, a green dragon crawls by. Scales dark emerald green, ancient as the Earth. It jumps and spreads its enormous bat-like wings. It glides inside the majestic cave, hitting and breaking stalactites that have been growing ever so slowly for thousands of years. It is now awake from its ancient slumber. The dragon burst out of its cave high in the cliffs above the clouds and flies steeply downward and rises back up; it stops and freezes in mid air. Jess Walker puts down the pencil next to the drawing of the green dragon. He stands back from the table and walks into the kitchen to pour himself a cup of coffee. Stretching his head from side to side Jess walks towards the front door. His left hand rises slowly to push open the front door. The door slowly opens with a view of children playing in a park across the street. They are laughing and playing. It's late Saturday morning. Exiting his apartment, Jess sits in his hammock chair on his tropical plant infested porch and reads a headline on his phone with a sad sigh on his face the headline reads,

Living on Native Land
Back in the fall of 2014, my then 3-year-old daughter ardently desired to blow off steam after preschool by running into the woods behind our apartment complex. Being tall enough to see the whole area from our back window every morning, I told her there was nothing to see. Our "backyard" consisted of a small wooded area and a marshy, muddy field separating us from I-75, the longest expanse of highway in the country. Still, having seen too many episodes of "Dora," my daughter insisted it was a “magic forest” worth exploring.

Turtle Island
Raye was born in October of 2015, to an E.M.T. and a surgeon. Growing up, she spent most of her time roaming the halls of a hospital in Baltimore, MD, now called Resident 3. She spent her time making arounds, playing in the community funded greenhouse, visiting with patients, and had a reputation as the hospital fairy, skipping around with a mist bottle, a mix of sanitizer and glitter, offering spritzes of the stuff to hospital personnel, patients, and visitors. Raye's 'Fairy Serum' became so popular that she and her mother set up bins specifically to collect the small empty sanitizer bottles from around the hospital to make hundreds them, helping Raye to understand a bit of repurposing. Word of this special treatment got out and before her parents knew it, corporate collaborative offers were being made to patent and market the idea. Her parents were hesitant with the investors until Raye had a better idea. The bottles would be sold at stations all over the hospital, creating lemonade-stand like booths, and be manned by volunteer patients. It was a success! The money collected allowed for constant flow of supplies, and the idea spread like a wildfire across the other residential areas of the now sectionalized and militantly quarantined country.
