What really goes on in the Bermuda triangle
The Bermuda Triangle, known for mysterious disappearances, has puzzled explorers since Columbus's 1492 voyage with strange phenomena like unexplained lights and compass malfunctions. Despite some explanations, its mysteries remain largely unsolved.

The Bermuda Triangle: A Persistent Mystery
Introduction: The Enigma of the Bermuda Triangle
One of the enduring mysteries of our world remains the Bermuda Triangle, a region infamous for unexplained disappearances of ships, boats, and planes. Rewinding history back about 600 years, we find the story of Christopher Columbus, an Italian explorer who inadvertently sailed through this mysterious area on his quest to reach Asia—a land rich with spices, silk, and minerals.
Columbus’s Journey: A Wrong Turn Leads to Mystery
In 1492, with the support of Spain’s royal family, Columbus embarked on his journey. However, instead of reaching Asia, he found himself in the waters of what is now known as the Bermuda Triangle—a region bordered by Bermuda, Puerto Rico, and Florida. This area has become notorious for strange occurrences and unexplained disappearances.
Columbus's Strange Encounter
As Columbus neared the end of his voyage, he recorded in his logs a strange and unsettling event. He witnessed a huge flash in the sky, an experience that would have terrified any sailor, especially when lost at sea. What’s peculiar is that Columbus didn’t report any strong winds, heavy rain, or massive waves, just a single flash of light. This sighting was followed by his compass needle behaving erratically.
Possible Explanations: The Asteroid Hypothesis
Modern scientists have attempted to explain Columbus’s experience, suggesting that an asteroid may have crashed into the ocean, causing the flash of light and disrupting the magnetic field, leading to the malfunction of Columbus’s compass. Asteroids, which contain minerals and metals, sometimes have magnetic fields that can influence nearby instruments.
The Bermuda Triangle’s Unsolved Cases
The Disappearance of the SS Cotopaxi
On November 29, 1925, the cargo ship SS Cotopaxi embarked on a journey to Havana, Cuba, carrying coal. Unfortunately, it never reached its destination. The ship was last heard from two days into the trip when it sent out a distress signal after encountering a tropical storm. The ship and its 32 crew members vanished without a trace. Although fictional accounts, like Steven Spielberg’s depiction of the ship’s wreckage in the Gobi Desert, have captured public imagination, the real fate of the Cotopaxi remained a mystery until 2020.
Discovery of the Cotopaxi Wreck
In 2020, marine biologist Michael Barnette identified a wreck 40 miles from St. Augustine, Florida, as the SS Cotopaxi. The discovery was supported by evidence, including brass valves stamped with the initials "SV," likely from the Scott Valve Manufacturing Company, which had supplied parts for the Cotopaxi. The ship’s sinking was later attributed to water flooding the hold during a tropical storm, due to inadequate repairs on the ship's hatches before it set sail.
The Bermuda Triangle’s Persistent Mysteries
The Disappearance of Passenger Jets
The Bermuda Triangle has also claimed aircraft. In 1948, a passenger jet traveling from San Juan, Puerto Rico, to Miami, disappeared along with its 32 passengers. Despite clear weather, the plane vanished without a trace. Years later, a similar plane was found in the area, but its identity could not be confirmed due to the lack of identifiable markings.
The Case of the Missing Trainee Pilots
Another mysterious event occurred in 1945 when a group of trainee pilots vanished while practicing navigation. Despite being under the supervision of an experienced pilot with 2,500 flight hours, the group lost their way and disappeared. The most plausible explanation is that they ran out of fuel, but the circumstances remain unexplained, leading some to speculate about supernatural involvement.
A Personal Account: Bruce Gernon’s Time Warp
Introduction to Gernon’s Flight
On December 4, 1970, pilot Bruce Gernon, along with his father and business partner, was flying a Beechcraft Bonanza from Andros Island in the Bahamas to Florida. This routine flight took an unexpected turn when Gernon encountered a series of unusual and potentially dangerous phenomena.
Encountering the Mysterious Cloud
Gernon noticed a small cloud that rapidly grew in size. As he climbed to 11,500 feet, he found himself inside a massive, cylindrical cloud. For 30 minutes, he flew through this dark, tunnel-like formation, illuminated by mysterious flashes of white light. Gernon’s instruments began to malfunction, with his compass spinning uncontrollably.
Exiting the Time Tunnel
As Gernon approached the end of the cloud tunnel, the walls began to close in, forming a vortex. Suddenly, the plane burst out of the tunnel, and Gernon realized he had somehow traveled the entire distance to Miami in just 47 minutes—a flight that normally took 90 minutes. The aircraft used significantly less fuel than expected, adding to the mystery.
Theories and Explanations
Gernon believed that he had encountered an "electronic fog," while others speculate that dark energy or a time-space anomaly caused the plane to travel so quickly. Although no definitive explanation exists, some attribute the malfunctioning instruments to disturbances in the Earth's magnetosphere, possibly due to solar activity.
Conclusion: The Bermuda Triangle Remains an Enigma
Despite scientific advancements and numerous investigations, the Bermuda Triangle continues to be a source of fascination and mystery. While some incidents, like the SS Cotopaxi’s sinking, have been explained, many others remain unsolved. Whether it’s strange magnetic fields, powerful storms, or something even more mysterious, the Bermuda Triangle continues to baffle and intrigue.
