Faith and Folly
If you would have told my fourteen-year-old self that I would someday walk away from my Christian faith, I would have thought you were crazy. At that age I was such a strong believer that no amount of evidence or reason would make me believe otherwise. At age fourteen, I thought that I would never stray and never stumble. It was ingrained so deeply in my head that I never even thought to question it. But even then I knew that I didn't feel that strong bond with God that other believers described. I believed he existed wholeheartedly, but I didn’t have that “connection” that seemed to come so naturally to everyone around me in the church community. Looking around the room during times of worship, I would see people, hands raised, singing so loudly and passionately, and I just didn’t get it. Where did that passion come from? Why didn’t I feel that strong divine influence? I kept thinking that if I was patient and prayed hard enough it would eventually click, and I remember sitting in church praying, begging for the God of the universe to reveal himself in a way that would completely knock me off my feet and show me his mighty sovereignty. But that never seemed to happen for me, so at the end of sophomore year I got tired of waiting around and I think that was the beginning of the end for me. Realizing that that wasn’t going to happen for me was the first step in accepting that, if there was a God, he didn’t seem to care about me.

Freshman Year: High School
Some say these four years are the best years of your life; the archway, or the bridge of new opportunities full of new adventures. Some say these years go by so fast you really don't remember what happened. But what they don't tell you is that first year—freshman year—is the worst. They don't tell you that you will spend countless nights up all night trying to meet a deadline. That you will lose hours of sleep trying to get up early and look "perfect" and look up to high school standards, but you will always think someone is prettier than you, or has a perfect body. They don't tell you that girls are bitches and guys are man whores. Girls will make fun of you for things you say and things you do, they will even make fun of you for who you talk or hang out with. Some will act like your best friend and within a day or two, they will hate you. They leave out the part where guys will tell you that you're "beautiful" and he "loves you" and will lead you on for weeks, then all of a sudden he is dating a new girl. They also didn't mention that you will study for hours on end and still get a C or D on your test, and that trying your best means that you have to emotionally kill yourself and put huge mental strain on yourself. But they swear "these are the best four years of your life."

I was born in the year of 1956. It was a great year. Many great people I know were born that year. My closest friends were born that year. As Frank Sinatra once sang, “It was a very good year.” Even though I was born in 1956, I was actually reborn in September of 1970. That was the year I started high school.

ACT
Dear Jim, It is wonderful that you are about to take the ACT. However, it would seem that you need some questions answered first, which is reasonable. The ACT reading test is a 35 minute test with 40 questions about reading passages. Each reading passage is about 750 words long and there are 4 passages total. There is one passage about Humanities, Prose Fiction, Science, and Social Science, all with 10 questions per passage. You should know the directions beforehand, so as to not waste time. You should know the layout of the test. On the left side of each column of reading material, there are numbers. These numbers tell you the line number, and they appear every 5 lines. This helps you quickly reference the lines that a question refers to. After reading each passage, the questions are in no particular order and vary in difficulty. You will be given an answer sheet, separate from the test booklet that has the passages and questions, you will use the answer sheet to record your answers. It is important to note that nothing you write in the test booklet is graded, so make sure you use the answer sheet.

Most Expensive Private High Schools in America
High school can teach you a lot. No, I'm not just talking about knowing what the powerhouse of the cell is, I'm talking about learning how to work together with people you might not like, make friends, and manage your time. Where you learn all of this stuff is really important, too, since a good education is proven to lead to making more money after graduation, a lower chance of ending up and jail, and all sorts of positive benefits.

What Is Life Really Like After High School?
High school is and was the most social part of my life. In high school, you were able to make friends in the matter of a couple seconds of entering a class. Some friends you make freshman year stick with you until senior year. But others move on to better or worse things. You think that life is difficult now, just wait. I know the last year of high school is stressful; having to apply for colleges, and the waiting for the acceptance, and working to pay your bills but it all works out eventually. That moment you walk across the stage at the end of senior year on graduation night, your entire life changes.

Why School Should Start Later
Do you hate waking up in the morning? High school students are waking up as early as six o’clock to begin their day. Some even earlier! The unreasonable morning start times for schools work against the natural sleep patterns of teens. Lack of sleep can result in decreased brain power, as well as an increased chance of mood disorders. Students need a recommended eight and a half to nine and a half hours to properly function (Richmond). This is why school should start no earlier than 9 AM.
