The Value of an English Degree
Many of us who were English majors might have heard: “Well, I guess you could always teach,” or “Are you sure a degree in English is worth it?” While I was an undergraduate student in my twenties, I was questioned a lot, and it didn’t feel good. There were times I doubted how useful my degree would be in post-graduate life. Would I end up working as a barista? I hoped not. The angst of figuring out what I wanted to do career-wise was part of it. Though I’ve wondered why we often question the valuable skill set we acquire with an English degree and all that we have to offer the world. Today, I argue that those of us with English degrees hold a remarkable advantage over everyone else—we can write.

My Training Odyssey
Once upon a time I thought I would be an equipment operator until I died. I loved running dozer and finding solutions to complex problems with the movement of dirt. I loved running drill and being the first to drill into the virgin ground that had never had a human touch before. Once upon a time I ran almost everything…and loved it!

Censorship of History by banning books
After the McMinn County School Board voted in January to remove “Maus,” a graphic novel about the Holocaust, from its eighth-grade curriculum, the community quickly found itself at the center of a national frenzy over book censorship.

The Golden Rain
“Nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space, or so they say. It is our job to teach kids how to hear what the universe is telling us." Marc finished the sentence and looked up as Evi jumped up and ran to the loo. It was not uncommon to experience space sickness on the space station satellite. Nonetheless, it made transitioning a challenge. Other eras had adapted to critical shifts and so would they."

Racism is racism no matter how you slice and dice it
Is this the 1940’s or is it 2022? If a private co-op tried to create a similar housing that banned persons of color the NAACP would have filed a lawsuit so fast that the property would have shut down. If you try to have anything that is similar to Black Entertainment Television for whites only again the NAACP will file a lawsuit for inclusion. But what I am reading out of the University of California, Berkeley smacks of racism. How can it not? In his article they refer to the student who are persons of color pays to have a place to stay that is free of white people violence. I am not understanding this at all. I thought we had done away with Jim Crow, separate but equal and I thought the anti-discrimination act of 1964 did away with this bull shit? I thought the civil rights act put an end to this crap.

Part II: Snippets of Somers Teachers
A few more snipets of our Somers Teachers Mr. Bickel I think my brother had Mr. Bickel, but the luck of the draw did not do me the honors in 7th grade. I set out to get to know him nonetheless, and once again, no string of memories to draw upon. There’s just the strong impression of his sense of humor, and an appearance that was not as athletically sleek as a Mr Pellegrino or Mr. Burke. But my main memory from that time comes from the field of play.

What I've Learned From 1 Year Of Teaching Abroad
I've been a teacher for a little over a year now. My students are all native Spanish speakers, and I'm trying to teach them to write in a way that they can express themselves. I guess one thought that's crossed my mind is that by me writing in a public space, my students would have no excuse for not wanting to write in a private one. I always tell them that they can write whatever they want, even if they go off-topic. The most important thing is that they write in their own way. No copying.
