Mo's Pizza Was The Ultimate '90s Experience
The Pizza Place of My Childhood

Saying I love the ’90s is an understatement because I love everything from the campy movies to the iconic music. One of my favorite things about the ’90s was that you could find arcade cabinets everywhere. There was a Pac-Man cabinet at the grocery store, Street Fighter at Pizza Hut, and most importantly a Mortal Kombat cabinet at Mo’s Pizza. In all honesty, Mo’s Pizza was everything I loved about my 90’s experience.
You’ve probably never heard of Mo’s Pizza, and that’s because it’s a small restaurant located in Westwego, Louisiana. The original building that housed the restaurant burned down, but in true Louisiana fashion, they rebuilt and expanded it. I moved before the restaurant burned down, and I’ve only been able to visit one time since it was rebuilt, so the memories I’m sharing are from my prior visits.
As I mentioned above, Mo’s Pizza was in the ’90s. First, who doesn’t love fresh, homemade pizza? My family usually picked up food from Mo’s on Friday nights. It was almost part of our weekend routine. We’d go to the local video rental store and pick up some movies and games right before we’d go pick up our order at Mo’s Pizza. I used to play Mortal Kombat on the arcade cabinet while I waited for my dad to retrieve the food. I wasn’t very good at the game, but if I were still playing when my dad came back, he would watch and cheer me on.
Sometimes my mom would bring me to Mo’s after school let out. She’d order us lunch and I’d play Mortal Kombat while we waited for the food. She wasn’t the biggest fan of Mortal Kombat, but I think I managed to convince her to play once. Sadly, the Mortal Kombat arcade cabinet was lost in the fire and they haven’t replaced it (as of my last visit).
I remember Mo’s Pizza playing 90’s alternative in their restaurant, a sound that I now associate with their restaurant. I discovered many of my favorite bands at Mo’s, such as Better than Ezra, Bush, Green Day, and the solo act Eagle Eye Cherry.
The old dining room was small, with a red and white checked tablecloth at every table, but I don’t ever remember eating inside the restaurant. There was also a small waiting area where you could sit and wait for your order. This waiting area was in the same room with the glass case where the workers pulled the single pizza slices from. As a child, I was impressed by the amount of pizza in the case. I always stuck with cheese pizza, but it was interesting to see how many types they offered.
For whatever reason, I loved to have Mo’s Pizza on a rainy, gloomy day. The familiar sound of the rain beating down on the metal building mixed with the 90’s alternative brought me a certain level of comfort. If I lived closer, today would be the perfect day for me to go pick up some pizza.
I realize that I haven’t talked about the food yet, and that’s because I was saving the best for last. The pizza at Mo’s Pizza is some of the best (and biggest) I’ve ever had. If you ask for one slice, you are given a plate with two large slices on it. The slices are homemade and as big as my head. Mo’s might have pizza in the name, but it’s not the only thing Mo’s has to offer. Mo’s Pizza has a menu that consists of an array of Italian food, including muffulettas and lasagna. All their offerings are delicious, so if you should stop by Mo’s Pizza if you get the chance.
