“The tooth fairy didn’t come.” The little girl opened her hand to reveal the tooth she’d lost the night before. This wasn’t her first rodeo. She’d come to expect at least a dollar under her pillow.

Her mother had simply forgotten to make the swap. Thinking quick, she asked the girl to double check while retrieving two dollars from her purse.

Then she locked herself in the bathroom to ‘summon the fairy’ and ‘negotiate’ using a silly fairy voice. She emerged triumphantly with the balance plus interest!

The girl hadn’t the heart to tell her mother she didn’t believe anymore.

Dear Mrs. Leslie - I feel the need to say - 'For our kids, too' - that I'm so glad the 'Tooth Fairy' still exists with all of that's being pressed upon our youngins of late; who needs that. Thank you for your comment re; 'The Fatal Vows' it's so nice to hear from your generation from time to time. Jay

I love the story. When my own children were young, I made it a point to collect coins from around the world, and with each Tooth Fairy "deposit" of spendable money, some foreign coins were included. Each of my children had the same reaction: the money to spend represented an opportunity to find and purchase some exciting new treasure, but they were most excited about the foreign coins. Where had the Tooth Fairy traveled? What exciting lands had she been to? What is life like in other parts of the world? Who else had possessed this coin? We would spend time researching and discussing the foreign coins and the lands from which they came, and they still have their collections today. There was no real monetary value in these coins, but the dreams and curiosity they sparked proved priceless!

  • Awwww, but she got the dollars, and if she didn't believe in the tooth fairy she must have been a mercenary scheming little child. Loved it
