art
From photography to painting to filmmaking, erotic art closes the gap between sex and pop culture.
Chapter One: The Installation
In early 2016, I worked on an art project with an artist near Findhorn. She seemed intrigued by me and seemed particularly intrigued by my thoughts on male chastity. I was starting to think a bit more seriously about using it as a feature in my photographs and in my writing, and it seemed like this might be something we could work on together.

The Weird, Sexualized Art of 'Grace and Frankie' by Nancy Rosen
Grace and Frankie is a hilarious, albeit obscure Netflix comedy starring two longtime Hollywood favorites - Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. Grace, played by Jane Fonda, is a retired upscale cosmetics mogul, while Frankie, played by Lily Tomlin, is a hippie art teacher who occasionally freelances.

Millennial Men and Nudity
There’s a trend I’ve noticed in recent years: A subgenre of porn called “Ignore” videos, in which the stars are fully clothed and do regular activities (such as talk on their phone or read a book) while ignoring the viewer, have become popular lately. Some men get aroused by being ignored or from the voyeuristic point-of-view. Other “porn” stars (if you can call them that) remain clothed and simply bark directives at the viewer, fulfilling specific fantasies like treating the viewer like a dog or jerk off instruction (JOI).

Inspiring Examples of Erotic Illustrations
If pornography as a whole exists to satisfy our animalistic, inherently human sexual impulses–a means to an end–then it follows that works of erotic art should be similarly differentiated by the artist’s intention as opposed to its degree of explicitness; nudity is a wholly inaccurate benchmark. Someone who approaches artistic mediums with blanket, concrete definitions in mind might underestimate the capability of erotic illustrations to draw on one’s emotions, assuming instead that its disconnect from the human form (in that it’s not a direct depiction like photography) necessarily diminishes its sexuality and capacity to imprint upon our sexual identities.

Best Vintage Sex Magazine Logos
Before the sexual revolution enabled pornography to go mainstream (do Penthouse and Playboy sound familiar to you?) adult magazines, or ‘girlie mags’, were already in successful circulation. Now, all of these years later, you might infer that the precursors to mainstream distribution were tamer than their successors; no nipple means less suggestive, right? However, the titles and overall aesthetic of vintage porn are in some ways more lewd and crude than their modern counterparts, more akin to so-called ‘hardcore’ porn which often highlights specific sexual fetishes.

The Bizarre World of Sasha Grey Fan Art. Top Story - December 2016.
As Rolling Stones once put it, Sasha Grey is “the dirtiest girl in the world”, or she used to be. Now–by Grey’s own design–it’s unclear exactly what she is, but her wide cultural impact speaks for itself. Grey is hailed as a ‘hipster porn star,’ which is not so much a sub-genre as much as a categorization of a person whose body of work reflects no identifiable common thread.
