Navigating the Pain Game
“Candidate One-Zero-Eight, out of the van,” the unseen driver barked. I disembarked hastily from the back of a blacked-out moving van and hustled towards the silhouette in the adjacent clearing. The tacticool ball cap rattled off two series of numbers before dismissing himself. On bended knee I raced through a few calculations and scratched a few figures on my laminated map.

Golden Blood
Blood. A substance that carries oxygen and nutrients to the cells and carries away carbon dioxide and other waste products. A transport liquid that is pumped by the heart to all corners of your body, before returning to the heart to repeat the process.

Spring 2021 starts on March 20th, unless it started on March 1st.
“Happy first day of Spring!” A coworker said to me, and she wasn’t the first one to say it. I looked outside, it was snowing. It had snowed almost everyday since November. What were these people thinking? This was not Spring.

I Used Math To Make the Highschool Football Team
The title probably has you thinking about the movie Moneyball. Or maybe you thought about the girl who used math to win a figure skating competition. She was so smart, she could calculate trajectories and figure out the best angles and timing or something.

Vampires are real!
Forget Edward Cullen—the first time I felt the seductive lure of the undead was when I saw Tom Cruise on the movie poster for “Interview with the Vampire.” It was 1994, and I was not quite nine years old. Cruise starred in the film as the vampire Lestat, the dark anti-hero of Anne Rice’s classic horror novels. Lestat’s electric blue eyes seemed to stare out at me and pierce my soul, the same way his fangs pierced a succession of necks in the movie. Edward Cullen, the brooding young hero of the “Twilight” vampire sagas, didn’t come along until later. Cullen captivated my little sister’s generation, while I stayed stuck on Tom Cruise’s Lestat and his blood-sucking protégé, Louis, played by Brad Pitt in “Interview.”

Curiosity for Systems of the Human Body
Those of us interested in the medical field aren't the only types of people who enjoy knowing a variety of medical facts. Personally, my intrigue with the human body began with a passion for the Saw films. As a lover of horror, you can often find reference to the human body in a variety of sub-genres that aren't restricted to so-called "torture porn". Perhaps I'm the only one who enjoys making these connections, but they are my two biggest passions. For this informal essay (really an informative stream of consciousness) I will point out a few facts I find fun, revolving around systems of the body I enjoy learning about the most.

AOSD: The Dragon
1.5 in a million they said. You’re 1.5 in a million if the dragon finds you. 1.5 in a million if they’re smart enough to see. When the illness is so rare most doctors have never heard of it, the path to recovery is ice beneath the dragon’s claws. I was one of the lucky ones.
