Tarkov's Arena is Still Problematic (And Might Always Be)
Arena recently got a relatively large update that also coincided with a wipe; resetting everyone’s rank and preset progress back to pretty much zero. And with the update came some large changes to the presets, how you unlock them, and how they are divided up between themselves. While I won’t be going into the specific details of the patch notes, I’ll leave a link in the description if you want to read them yourself, after playing the new version of Arena, things don’t feel like they are headed in the right direction for some elements of this game mode. There are plenty of changes that were positive: removing grenades from pretty much all the classes and adding them to the world level. Allowing players to funnel their experience towards a specific preset they want to unlock and being able to use any preset within that respective class. Standardizing the medication each preset has so at the very least everyone has painkillers. These were important changes to help reign in the power of each preset. But the problems with Arena go deeper than just number tweaks and adjusting the equipment on offer for a particular present. As badly as I want Arena to be successful and a fun, faster-paced alternative to regular Tarkov, I fear as though that Tarkov was never truly meant to be an arena style shooter. Some people might immediately say, well no shit, of course the writing was on the wall. And you’re kind of right; but I had hopes deep down that BSG would find an interesting way to bring the slower more methodical gameplay of Tarkov to a faster paced environment. And so far, it doesn’t feel like they understand the root issues with trying to artificially speed up Tarkov. There’s still time to figure it out, and their roadmap is substantial enough that we might get there eventually, but let’s go over why fundamentally, Tarkov’s arena mode might never get where the player base as well as BSG hopes to get it.

LVOP or Low variable power optic is a style of scope that usually has two magnifications that can be adjusted to either or. And Tarkov has plenty of these choices on offer. The Burris 1-4x, the Razor 1-6x, Vudu 1-6x and Schmitt and Bender 1-8x. These scopes are highly sought after and can be extremely powerful in the right hands, on the right weapon. But that begs the question: are these kinds of scopes too powerful in the game? Because let’s be real for a moment: you see one of these on a gun, or in the world, where is that optic going? You’re taking out your CMS kit, or your splint and ammo to put that sucker in there, because not only are they powerful optics, but because they are so popular, they sell for ludicrous amounts on the flea market. The Genius Behind Tarkov's Beginner Friendly Map
Ground Zero is Escape From Tarkov’s Newest map addition into the game, and the goal of Ground Zero is to be more of an introductory level into the game for new players to become familiar with Tarkov’s mechanic, level design, and general map flow. And while there are some small issues that could still be ironed out, the map itself is a great addition to the game, and a solid start for those who might be new or long-term players revisiting after many years of not playing. I’ve praised BSG’s level design in Tarkov for many years, but Ground Zero kind of takes it to another level. From the actual layout of the map to the subtle storytelling and hints that are sprinkled throughout the whole level, it can be easy to miss some of these, and not appreciate the level of detail that went into the map, especially the ones that are targeted directly at the new players. So, I wanted to talk about Ground Zero and how not only it’s a wonderful level in the more generic sense, but how the map gives you tons of hints, clues, and insight into other mechanics that reside within Tarkov and its other locations, that you will absolutely experience later down the line the longer you play.

Magic items, especially the common ones, can get dull. If you have seen one +1 dagger, you have seen them all, right? Well, with a little work, you can make the weakest magic weapon interesting. Just ask yourself, who made these, and why? Add a few details and maybe a minor magical effect that makes the item stand out so that a player appreciates having it. You do not need to give every random item a backstory, but having a class of items that shares a reason for existing in a campaign makes them meaningful. Give items a place in a culture, a role that can create plot hooks or just be interesting. “These are from this culture and were made for this reason” reduces the sheer boredom of a random, nondescript magical item.
