My Review of "Captain America: Brave New World"

This movie was appropriately named. It says everything about this movie.

Captain America: Brave New World sort of opens up this new era in the Marvel cinematic universe (MCU). It feels like there was some sort of reset that still feels like it's in the same universe as its previous movies. There are some drawbacks to the fact that it's a product of the MCU. You will get a little lost watching this movie if you haven't kept up with the rest of the movies and TV shows.

The movie starts off with some some action sequences with our new Captain America, Sam Wilson. There are references of the past but some may get confused if they're watching this movie without any references. I'll quickly give you the low down.

Basically, there was a previous Captain America by the name of Steve Rogers. He was a great American hero but he had super powers. He passed on trust shield over to Sam as a symbolic gesture of Sam becoming the new Captain America. This title was stripped away from him when America decided to create another super soldier similar to Steve. The problem was that the replacement was narcissistic and the power got to his head. This is why Sam is the best candidate for the shield. He's selfless and never backs down from doing what's right. These are basically the qualities that made Captain America great in the first place.

Since Steve was such a great representative, Sam has doubts about himself. Sam also relies on a super suit to aid him whereas the original captain had super strength. That's a little weird because the actions Sam engages in look like he has super strength. It's a comic book movie so I won't think too much of it. It's a common problem in the MCU where regular human heroes seem to have super strength for some reason. You'll have to shut that part of your brain off when you're watching these movies.

Sam's self doubt is a continuous focus of this movie. He doesn't quite have the confidence to take the mantle. This makes him the reluctant hero. What makes it good is that he's got the moxie and good will to continue to work despite his shortcomings. In that way, I can see how he's the new captain.

While Sam is having his existential crisis there is some geographical conflict that harken back to something that happened in the movie, Eternals. Again, this is a huge shortcoming of this movie as you really have to be caught up in your MCU lore to understand what's going on.

Basically after that movie there was a god like creature known as a celestial that died on earth. This gigantic corpse has an abundant metal known as adamantium. The countries of the world are fighting to gain access to this precious metal.

The new president of the United States decides that it's best in their hands. He is also a character named Ross, who was in one of the first MCU movies called The Incredible Hulk. He wants to do what he thinks is right but he's got a ton of skeletons in his closet. In this movie, all of those skeletons seem to be flying out the closet and hitting him everywhere it hurts.

Sam's new mission is to figure out what all of these skeletons are and try to see what he can do to tie down these skeletons and keep the peace. That's going to be tough task. This movie goes into a lot of espionage and sleuthing to figure out what's going on and figure out what's right and what's wrong.

There's a lot to like in this movie if you've been keeping up with the MCU. You'll understand all of the call backs and references. Things will also make a ton of sense and it will be a fun ride. Then there's those that haven't kept up. I have a feeling these people will be totally lost and not know what's going on. I feel like this is a product of the MCU's own doing whether this is popular or not. It's kind of a gauge to see if people have been following the stories or not. If it's successful then the MCU will not have to explain every detail or go into stand alone stories for later movies. If it isn't so successful, they're going to know they're going to have to explain more or go into more succinct stories for later iterations.

Overall, I am lucky that I've kept up with what's going on with the MCU. I had a good time with this movie because I was able to keep up with what's going on. Counter to that I can see how people can be put off by this movie if they haven't been keeping up with the MCU. There are simply too much information you have to know to fully understand this movie. I have to give this movie a 7 out of 10.
