My Review of "Jurassic World: Rebirth"

It's the silly dinosaur movie you think it's going to be. Don't expect a masterpiece.

Jurassic World: Rebirth is the latest dinosaur movie to come from a franchise that will never die. I had to see it in theatres because a movie like this warrants watching in the theatres. It's the summer and I wanted to see a big monster movie and that's pretty much what I got with this movie. I'm not going to say it's the best one out there but why do we expect everything to be continuously better? Not all franchises are created equally.

This movie starts off trying to give you a little briefing on what's been going on in the world. Dinosaurs still exist amongst the world but they've migrated closer to the equator. Apparently the habitat there is closer to what it's like for them millions of years ago.

Of course the world isn't doing so great either. This is where we get introduced to our characters. It's funny because each of the movies of the franchise have a formulaic group of characters and this movie follows suit. We have a creepy guy that wants to get everyone collecting blood samples from dinosaurs for money, Martin. He's such a cartoonish villain throughout the movie. It's his plan to collect these blood samples to make millions of dollars for everyone.

We then get introduced to Zora who is the hired mercenary of the whole operation. Of course we have an expert doctor, Henry. We have the boat operator with a heart of gold by the name of Duncan. They are teamed up with a bunch of expendables that are surely going to die throughout the movie.

I thought it was weird that we didn't have any kids and then all of a sudden they have this side story. Reuben, the dad, is sailing in the middle of the dinosaur infested ocean with his two kids Teresa and Isabella. They were so kind enough to bring Teresa's brand new comic relief boyfriend Xavier. To be fair, Xavier seems like the kind of guy that needs to get killed right away.

Basically this becomes a color by numbers video game like adventure. There are three major dinosaurs that the team is looking to find and their mission is to get back home with their blood samples. It's a very simple movie with easy to understand. Though, there are a lot of nonsensical things that happen. You will definitely need to throw your brain out the door to have fun with this one. That's pretty much the same for all of these types of movies though. You know what you're getting into when watching this movie so it's not a big deal.

I liked a lot of the special effects. This is one of the movies where I was actually impressed with what they did with some of the CGI. Yes, there are still obvious signs of CGI throughout the movie but for the most part it was done well. The sound stage was also done quite well as well. Though I was hoping to hear a lot more atmospheric sound effects and directional sound effects.

There was also some fun elements of guessing when characters were going to die. That's kind of the fun of watching these movies. You're trying to guess how they're going to do it and hope that they throw us off in some scenes. The movie tries to lean into some of the horror elements with suspense like the other movies and for the most part it works. There is some good tension in a few of the scenes closer to the end.

Overall, I had a good time with this movie but again it's not the best of the series. It does take a little while to get into the movie but when they get to dinosaur island this movie picks up the pace. I think people that are looking for dumb action can enjoy this. Those that are familiar with the franchise will feel right at home with this one. I have to give it a 6 out of 10. I don't know if I'd watch it again or recommend to others.
