Re-Reevaluating Andy Warhol
When Andy Warhol learned of Hollywood star Marilyn Monroe’s death in 1962 and promptly stamped her face onto a canvas in 25 alternating colour schemes, he propelled his art career to new heights and solidified the themes his work would explore for the rest of his life. Whether Warhol was aware of the power of celebrity worship and intentionally set out to take advantage of it when making the Marilyn Diptych, he did just that. Since the success of this piece and others like 32 Campbell's Soup Cans, the artist has been heralded as a major influence on the artistic world. While the assertion of his impact is not unwarranted, I believe that its true scope is often under-examined in favour of exploring his work as a pop artist. I am interested not in the artistic value of Warhol’s work, but in the societal. Focusing primarily on the artist’s collaboration with actress Edie Sedgwick, I argue that Andy Warhol can be described as both the paragon and harbinger of the Western world’s current celebrity culture and reality television landscape.

There are a lot of myths and legends surrounding the Winter Solstice, which takes place on December 21. This day is also known as the hiemal solstice or hibernal solstice, This is a mid-winter occurrence that happens twice a year when one of the Earth's poles, North or South, has its maximum tilt away from the Sun. It occurs once each in the Northern and Southern Hemisphere. The Winter Solstice is the day with the shortest period of daylight and the longest night of the year. As the Sun shines in the sky, on December 21 it will be at its “lowest daily maximum,” while at the pole, there is continuous darkness or twilight during the winter solstice. The reverse takes place during the Summer Solstice.

She likes all your favourite bands, and a few you haven’t heard of yet. She is unteachable, unethical, and unstoppably wonderful. She is every male writers’ favourite poorly thought out plot device, now legendary, the Manic Pixie Dream Girl. Famous examples of MPDG’s are Ramona Flowers (Scott Pilgrim), Clementine (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), and anything Zooey Deschanel has ever been in. These girls are interesting, creative, wilful, charismatic and within themselves often complex and invaluable characters. However, their existence remains attached to a man for whom she exists as a plot point, used to guide him to a better life, or else some other form of masculine clarity.
