To put it lightly, ER walked so your favorite medical dramas could run. Before shows like Grey's Anatomy, The Resident, Nurse Jackie, House, and The Pitt, you had ER.

The hit show featured a cast of medical staff battling the chaos of working in Chicago as well as their personal lives. Set in the fictitious County General Hospital, the short and long term cast captivated audiences for 15 seasons from 1994 to 2009. With the recent success of shows like The Pitt, it's caused younger audiences to seek out ER on streaming services such as Netflix and HBO Max.

While the show featured some big-name stars back in the day, it makes you wonder where everyone wound up. Of course we can't catch up with everyone who appeared on ER, we can revisit some of the most fan-favorite and longstanding characters.

Jerry Markovic

Played by: Abraham Benrubi

Serving as a longtime desk clerk in the ER, Jerry was a slightly odd but fan-favorite character. Despite taking breaks throughout the show, Benrubi appeared on ER as a recurring character from the show's debut until its final season in 2009.

Benrubi has a fairly impressive filmography appearing in shows such as The X Files, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Criminal Minds, Robot CHicken, Men in Trees, Once Upon a Time, and Bosch. He's also appeared in films such as George of the Jungle, Twister, Big Hero 6, The Call of the Wild, Rust, and The Belko Experiment. He's also done video game voiceovers for games such as Diablo III, Skylanders, and World of Warcraft.

Played by: William H. Macy

William H. Macy is perhaps one of the biggest household names to appear on the show. Starting as the chief of surgery, Macy left ER after 4 seasons. Aside from ER, Macy has appeared in Fargo, Mr. Holland's Opus, Ghosts of Mississippi, Pleasantville, Magnolia, Seabiscuit, and more. He is perhaps best known in recent years for his character Frank Gallagher in Shameless, which he won multiple Screen Actors Guild awards and received several Emmy nominations.

Macy married fellow actress Felicity Huffman in 1997 and the couple have two children.

Dr. Peter Benton

Played by: Eriq La Salle

Despite having movie roles prior to ER, such as Coming to America and Jacob's Ladder, La Salle found a home on network television for 8 seasons as the perfectionist surgeon, Dr. Benton. After his stint ended on ER, La Salle went on to star in shows and movies such as 24, One Hour Photo, Logan, and Under the Dome. He also published a novel, Laws of Depravity, in 2012 and has directed/produced episodes for Lucifer and Chicago P.D.

Dr. Doug Ross

Played by: George Clooney

Clooney was well on his way to becoming a huge star when ER started, and the show definitely helped his career more than anything. Clooney became a #1 heartthrob with his portrayal of a bad-boy pediatrician, even though he only lasted 5 seasons. As Dr. Ross rode off into the sunset, Clooney went on to start in several blockbuster films such as the Oceans franchise, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, From Dusk Till Dawn, The Perfect Storm, and Gravity. He was even nominated for an Oscar for his performance in Up in the Air.

Clooney married human rights advocate, Amal Alamuddin, in 2014 and the couple welcomed twins in 2017.

Nurse Carol Hathaway

Played by: Julianna Margulies

ER's head nurse, Carol Hathaway, was troubled from the start but she continued to push through despite budget and staffing shortfalls. Margulies lasted on ER for 6 seasons and even won an Emmy for her portrayal of Nurse Hathaway. After leaving ER, she went on to start in The Sopranos, Canterbury's Laws, Snakes on a Plane, and The Good Wife. She won two more Emmy's for her role in the latter.

Margulies married lawyer Keith Lieberthal in 2007 and welcomed a son in 2008.

Nurse Haleh Adams

Played by: Yvette Freeman

Freeman played Nurse Adams as a recurring character throughout ER's entire 15 season run, making her one of the most reliable characters. Originating in stage productions, Freeman appeared in stage versions of The Wiz and Ain't Misbehavin' prior to being cast in shows like Tales from the Crypt, Dragnet, and Hangin' with Mr. Cooper. Since ER, she's appeared in Days of Our Lives, Will Trent, and Orange is the New Black. She won a Screen Actors Guild statue along with the cast of the latter for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.

Nurse Malik McGrath

Played by: Dearon "Deezer D" Thompson

Nurse Malik always kept the vibes flowing in ER, despite the challenges of an underfunded institution. "Deezer D" was another actor to appear as a recurring character in all 15 seasons of ER, similar to Yvette Freeman. After the show, he appeared in Bringing Down the House, Bones, and In the Mix, along with becoming a Christian motivational speaker. He also was a rapper who released albums in 1999, 2002, and 2008.

Sadly, Thompson died of a fatal heart attack in 2021 at the age of 55.

Nurse Abby Lockhart

Played by: Maura Tierney

Appearing as a guest star in the first half of ER's 6th season, Nurse Lockhart became a series regular and appeared until the series' final season. Starting as an aspiring medical student, she retreats back into nursing and is a staple in the county hospital's nursing staff.

Another one of ER's more seasoned actors, Tierney appeared in Liar, Liar, Primary Colors, Law & Order, Roseanne, NewsRadio, Rescue Me, The Whole Truth, The Good Wife, The Affair, American Rust, and Law & Order: SVU. She was married to actor-director Billy Morissette from 1993 to 2006. In 2009, she announced she was battling breast cancer, causing her to leave the show Parenthood.

Dr. Jeanie Boulet

Played by: Gloria Reuben

Dr. Boulet broke ground on several fronts - not just portraying the important that physician's assistants play in healthcare, but also being an openly HIV-positive physician for nearly 6 seasons. The role itself inspired Gloria Reuben to become a social activist, focusing on raising awareness for HIV/AIDS and lobbying for increased advocacy.

Since appearing on ER, Reuben has starred in Law & Order: SVU, Raising the Bar, The Blacklist, Mr. Robot, The Librarians, The Equalizer, and Elsbeth. She's also appeared in films such as Lincoln, The Sentinel, and Firestarter.

Dr. Mark Greene

Played by: Anthony Edwards

Prior to landing the role as chief resident turned ER chief, Anthony Edwards appeared in Northern Exposure, Top Gun, and Revenge of the Nerds. Similar to other OG cast members, Dr. Greene was a staple on the show until Edwards' departure in season 8.

Edwards married Jeanine Lobell in 1994 and after 4 children, the couple divorced in 2015. Edwards re-married in 2021 to former ER costar, Mare Winningham. After ER, he appeared in Zodiac, Thunderbirds, Planes, Top Gun: Maverick, Blue Bloods, Designated Survivor, and Tales of the Walking Dead.

Dr. Susan Lewis

Played by: Sherry Stringfield

Stringfield had a fairly established career prior to ER including credits in NYPD Blue and Guiding Light. On ER, she played the struggling resident turned acting ER chief, despite a brief absence from the show from 1996 to 2001. Stringfield stayed on ER through season 12 and went on to appear in Touched by an Angel, Law & Order, CSI, Under the Dome, and Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders.

Stringfield has two children with her ex-husband, Larry Joseph.

Dr. Robert "Rocket" Romano

Played by: Paul McCrane

Dr. Romano is a rather polarizing figure in ER lore, with viewers either loving or hating him. A classic surgeon with a thriving ego and somewhat cold demeanor, Romano rose to become chief of staff and struggled after his character was faced with a pretty horrific accident. Despite it all, Paul McCrane portrayed the surgeon on ER for 7 seasons.

Aside from ER, McCrane has appeared in RoboCop, Rocky II, The Blob, The Shawshank Redemption, 24, CSI, Under the Dome, Harry's Law, and All Rise. He's also married with two children.

Dr. Elizabeth Corday

Played by: Alex Kingston

Dr. Corday came in as a European surgeon who transitioned to the ER, eventually marrying a fellow doctor. She also was forced to adjust to the differences in European medicine vs. American medicine, but she met every challenge she faced throughout 7 seasons on the show. Since appearing on ER, Alex Kingston appeared in Essex Boys, Alpha Dog, Like Crazy, CSI, Doctor Who, Law & Order: SVU, Private Practice, NCIS, Arrow, Blue Bloods, and A Discovery of Witches. She's also lent her voice to several BBC Radio shows and audiobooks, as well as appearing in several stage productions including Macbeth, Much Ado About Nothing, The Tempest, Julius Caesar, and Othello.

Kingston was briefly married to fellow English actor, Ralph Fiennes, and Florian Haertel. She also announced in 2025 that she'd successfully beaten uterine cancer.

Dr. Kerry Weaver

Played by: Laura Innes

Innes portrayal of a disabled ER doctor, who later came out as LGBTQ+, was another groundbreaking role for primetime TV. Dr. Weaver came into the show as not the most liked, but she lasted 12 seasons.

Aside from ER, Innes starred in My So Called Life, Rugrats, The Event, Awake, How to Get Away with Murder, Wings, and Deep Impact. She also discussed how portraying Dr. Weaver's disability caused real-life spinal damage which caused the showrunners to create a storyline that shows her character surgically correcting her disorder.

Dr. Jing-Mei "Deb" Chen

Played by: Ming-Na Wen

Jing-Mei is another character who briefly appeared and then came back for a more expansive tenure. Rising from an intern who made a mistake to an ER attending, she broke barriers as a Chinese-American and as a woman, and it was all thanks to the stellar work from Ming-Na Wen.

Aside from ER, Wen appeared in The Joy Luck Club, Street Fighter, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors, Ralph Breaks the Internet, Law & Order: SVU, Robot Chicken, The Batman, Two and a Half Men, Fresh Off the Boat, The Mandalorian, and more. She's perhaps the most well known for her iconic voice performance in Disney's Mulan. She's been marrie to Eric Michael Zee since 1995 and the couple has two children. Fun fact, her first pregnancy was written into the ER storyline.

Dr. John Carter

Played by: Noah Wyle

For 11 seasons, Wyle captivated audiences as Dr. Carter - the heartthrob doctor with a good heart and a rebellious streak. Since appearing on ER, Wyle has become a dedicated family man with three children. He's also gone on to star in Donnie Darko, An American Affair, Falling Skies, The Librarians, and The Red Line. And, of course, he has resurged as his portrayal of emergency room doctor, Dr. Robby, in The Pitt.
