Forever on Duty: The Army Man Who Defies Death at the Border

Duty Beyond Death: The Story of Baba Harbhajan Singh
In 1946, a small village called Kuka in the Kapurthala district of Punjab welcomed the birth of Harbhajan Singh. He came from humble beginnings, but his heart was filled with a profound sense of patriotism from a young age. At just 15, in 1956, Harbhajan Singh enlisted in the Indian Army, joining the 14 Rajput Regiment. His dream was to serve his country and safeguard its borders. No matter how perilous the circumstances, he approached his duties with unwavering dedication.
The Nathu La Pass Incident
Fast forward to 1967, Harbhajan Singh found himself stationed at Nathu La Pass in Sikkim, a region notorious for its harsh and treacherous weather along the India-China border. One fateful day, while leading a group of mules to deliver supplies, he lost his footing due to the icy conditions and rugged terrain. He fell into a glacier and lost consciousness. The chilling currents of the glacier swept him away, leading to his untimely demise.
His fellow soldiers searched tirelessly for three days but to no avail. However, the tale takes a remarkable turn. It’s said that Harbhajan Singh appeared in the dream of one of his comrades, revealing the precise location of his body. He told his comrade, “I have died, but my duty isn’t finished yet. You’ll find my body in that part of the glacier.” The very next day, the search party followed his directions and discovered his body exactly where he had indicated in the dream. He was honored with a full military cremation, and his last rites were conducted in his beloved village, Kuka.
The Spirit of Baba Harbhajan Singh Still on Duty
But the story of Harbhajan Singh didn’t conclude with his passing. Among the soldiers stationed at Nathu La Pass, a belief took root that his spirit continued to watch over the border. It’s said that he visits the dreams of soldiers, alerting them to impending dangers. On one occasion, soldiers even spotted a lit cigarette on an empty post, believed to be a
There’s an empty chair at the post, and even though no one is sitting there, everyone feels the presence of Baba Harbhajan Singh.
The Indian Army recognizes his unwavering loyalty, and in his honor, a shrine was established at Nathu La Pass. It’s a place where both soldiers and tourists come to pay their respects. This shrine is affectionately known as the “Baba Harbhajan Singh Temple.” Inside, you’ll find his uniform, boots, and other personal belongings carefully preserved, with daily rituals and upkeep taking place. People say that Baba’s spirit still shows up every day to fulfill his duty and safeguard the border.
Army’s Loyalty and Devotion
In recognition of his dedication, the Indian Army posthumously awarded Baba Harbhajan Singh the honorary rank of Captain. His salary was sent to his mother every month for as long as she lived. Each year, on September 11, his belongings are transported back to his village, Kuka, via a special train. Remarkably, his name still appears on the army’s payroll, and he has received promotions over time. This truly reflects his loyalty and patriotism.
At Nathu La Pass, soldiers believe that Baba’s spirit not only watches over Indian troops but also discourages any wrongdoing from the Chinese soldiers. There was even a moment during a flag meeting when the Chinese side placed an empty chair in honor of Baba, showing their respect for his presence. It’s said that if any conflict between India and China is looming, Baba gives a heads-up to both sides three days in advance.
Present Day
Baba Harbhajan Singh’s legacy continues to resonate with soldiers today. His shrine at Nathu La Pass is a revered site where thousands of tourists and soldiers come to pay their respects each year. His spirit is affectionately referred to as “Baba,” and his loyalty serves as a source of inspiration for every Indian soldier. Although he passed away in 1967, his spirit remains a guardian over Nathu La Pass, watching over the nation.
Baba Harbhajan Singh’s story is a powerful reminder that patriotism and loyalty know no bounds. His spirit is still regarded as part of the Indian Army, and his tale fills every Indian heart with pride.
