The Man Who Lost Half a Billion in Bitcoin
James Howells’ accidental disposal of a hard drive turned a small oversight into one of the greatest digital treasure hunts in history

In the world of cryptocurrency, where fortunes can be made or lost in a click, few stories are as astonishing—and heartbreaking—as that of James Howells. A British IT engineer from Newport, Wales, James Howells became a symbol of digital-age misfortune when he accidentally threw away a hard drive containing a Bitcoin wallet worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
It all began in 2009, when Bitcoin was still a novel experiment, barely worth pennies. Like many tech-savvy individuals intrigued by the idea of decentralized digital money, Howells mined Bitcoin from his laptop as a hobby. At the time, mining was relatively easy, and over a short period, he accumulated around 8,000 BTC. These coins were stored in a digital wallet on his hard drive—a device he would later regret not treating with more care.
By 2013, Bitcoin had started gaining serious traction. A single coin, once worth mere cents, was now valued in the hundreds of dollars. That’s when tragedy struck. During a routine cleanup of his office, Howells mistakenly discarded the hard drive that contained his Bitcoin wallet. It was thrown into a general waste bin at the local landfill in Newport. He realized the error a few months later—but by then, it was too late. The hard drive had already been buried beneath thousands of tons of waste.
At the time of the loss, the hard drive’s contents were worth around £4 million (about $6.5 million). As the years passed, Bitcoin's price soared, reaching an all-time high of over $60,000 per coin in 2021. Suddenly, Howells' lost stash was valued at over $500 million.
Determined not to give up, Howells launched an ongoing campaign to recover his lost fortune. He mapped out the likely location of the hard drive within the landfill and spent years developing proposals to dig it up. He even enlisted the help of environmental consultants, data recovery experts, and engineers. One of his plans involved deploying AI-powered robots and mechanical sorting arms to carefully sift through the landfill without causing environmental damage.
At one point, Howells offered the Newport City Council a cut of the recovered Bitcoins—amounting to tens of millions of pounds—in exchange for permission to search the landfill. Despite the potential windfall, the council repeatedly denied his requests, citing environmental risks, public health concerns, and the sheer logistical nightmare of excavating the site.
In response, Howells scaled up his efforts, presenting a £10 million-funded plan backed by venture capitalists, including a team of data recovery specialists, waste management professionals, and even ex-NASA engineers. The plan was meticulous, involving drone surveys, robotic dogs (like those from Boston Dynamics), and a data recovery lab on-site for immediate analysis if the drive were found.
But the council remained firm. As of 2025, all attempts to gain access to the landfill have been blocked. The hard drive, it seems, is destined to remain buried—an expensive casualty of human error and bureaucratic caution.
Despite the setbacks, Howells hasn’t given up hope. He continues to fight for the right to dig. His story has become a cautionary tale in the crypto community, a stark reminder of the risks of self-custody and the importance of backing up private keys securely. It has also inspired media coverage, documentaries, and even fictional adaptations that portray his ordeal as a modern-day treasure hunt.
What makes Howells' story so compelling isn't just the eye-watering amount of money at stake. It's the symbolism: a fortune lying just beneath the surface, locked away not by passwords or security but by dirt, bureaucracy, and fate. In a world where digital assets are intangible, his wealth is paradoxically more unreachable than buried pirate gold.
James Howells' lost Bitcoin remains one of the most infamous digital tragedies. Whether it’s ever recovered or not, it serves as a lasting parable of the thin line between riches and ruin in the cryptocurrency era.
