PLANET PLAGUE
RINGING My ears are ringing. I turned my head to the left and I see my commander staring back at me. Her head severed and eyes wide open. Her face frozen still uttering her last words before the explosion. The sky is Gray now as I turn to my right still clasping the Blood Red Locket. My body feels numb. I close my eyes. Tears running down the sides of my face and I pray that I get out of this alive. I open my eyes and slowly roll over to my side. We were ambushed. Only 2 blocks from our extraction point. Steely hands clasped my shoulder, it's Amy. Her face looks tormented. “Are you alright!” I nodded my head as she helped me to my feet. Pulling out my sidearm as we rushed to cover. In the buildings all around us, men are firing on our position. The crack and thunder of their guns are drawing them to us. Those whose souls are departed but they’re rotting corpses still walk among us hungry for our flesh. This planet is dead! Planet Plague as we call it. From our ship, just a Black Pearl levitating in space. 20 billion souls, all gone now, consumed by the evil that is this Heart Shaped Locket.

Tais Toi Mon Cœur
All he had to do was move, twitch, undulate. No one said undulate. But that's what he needed to do. It was only a little thing, such a little thing. Surely he could accomplish one little thing. He had done it before, surely. He had some vague memory of it. Was memory the right word? Those things like echoing dreams, like nudges formed from electricity and neurons. A curse. Memory was a curse. He thought maybe he could remember memory. It was only a simple thing, such a simple thing.

The Hunted Highway
I was walking for hours and hours just trying to find the trail I was recently on. It was getting dark and the clouds were rolling in making it darker than before. I was all alone in a dense dark forest, not knowing where I was. Until a highway. I did not know why there was a highway in the middle of nowhere. But it was there and I needed a ride to find my way home. It had already started to rain and it was so cold. I didn’t bring an umbrella with me, it looked really nice that morning. I wish I did though because I'm soaking wet. I see a car on the road maybe 800 ft away from me so I put up my hand to wave it down. It stopped for me. An old man with a beard said, “Do you need a ride?”. I said yes please and got in. It was warm in the car, way better than outside. He started to talk to me but I couldn’t quite hear him. I was just too focused on that object in the ride, it was like someone or something was coming over me. Then the man saw me staring at it and started yelling for me to put on my seat belt. Then he started to drive and ran over the object. After he did, I could hear him again. He tried to explain what it was and why he had to do that. But, then again I couldn’t quite hear him. I was just staring at the figure moving, shaping into different things. It looked like it was hurt and injured but when it saw me looking at it, it got up and started for the car. That made me freak out, so I started yelling at the driver to drive but the figure had already got to the car. It looked like a man at the window, I knew it wasn’t. I tried to tell the driver not to open the window and to lock the doors but the man didn’t listen. It was like he couldn’t hear me or something. The man with the beard just opened the window and the figure took its cranny, long, killer fingers and raped it around the man’s neck. I didn’t see what happened after that because I closed my eyes in terror. What is he going to do to me? Is he going to kill me too? Yup, he saw me in the back. He took his hand and drugged the man with the beard out of the car. The man’s neck was all bloody, he was lifeless laying on the road. It was like the figure had gotten stronger from killing him. He had ripped out the driver's seat and threw it so hard it went BANG! He was coming after me! I couldn’t move, I felt paralyzed. That thing was killing me slowly. The only thing I could see now is its bloody red, razor-sharp fangs. I couldn’t breathe, it had my neck, choking me. It’s fingernails digging into my juggler. Then it all went black.

Finders and Cursers
There was a point in my life where nothing was scarier to me as a mother than the worry that my girls would get into something they weren't supposed to. I had our cleaning products locked in the closet on the highest shelf because I didn't want them to think the Tide Pods were candy. With everything we've gone through, this worry seem like small potatoes now.

Just Can't Die
CARTER COULD STILL HEAR the screams and gunshots echoing out from the fiery valley behind him and his crew. The last week had been filled with the same screams of terror and sharp cracks of any gun the terrified could get their hands on. The wind had vanished almost altogether, the autumn trees frozen in time and any flag not ripped from its base was flat as a sheet of paper. Yet somehow, the stench of death and those awful sounds still carried over the mountains.

The Nucleus Jewel
Heart Shaped Locket Waking up on the Fourth of July it’s dark outside. I look at my clock and it's noon. This eerie feeling comes over me. I jump out of my bed in anxiousness to peek out my window. As I slowly open up my sheer white curtains. I look out to my lawn.. nothing out of the ordinary. I slip on my slippers and I walk downstairs in confusion. The house is dark and warm. Walking past the mirror in the hallway, I take a quick look to run my fingers through my hair feeling drowsy and hungry. I check the time on the stove.. 12:05 PM. A new daylight savings? I open the refrigerator to start cooking breakfast. I grab eggs and pancakes. As I start to shut the fridge door I hear a knock on the front door. I quickly turned my head, thinking who could that be? heading towards the front door I grab my cardigan off the dining room chair. I answer. It’s a Man in a linen grey suit tightly holding folders to his chest. Man- “Hello” (he says awkwardly) “Are you Rebecca?” Who’s asking? The Man hesitates. Choking on his words, I stand there patiently waiting for him to spit them out.

Red Eyed Nuns and Their Habits
Vf They do not give warning to their appearance and never speak. The soft black cloth they wear does not stand out from the normal garb of other nuns. The only feature that makes you second guess are the white clay masks they wear. Flat, smooth and blank. Only two holes for peering eyes to see through. They walk in a diamond formation of four. No one knows if there are more than four, just that they are only seen in one group at a time.

Bedtime Story: Godfather Death
As a child, I don’t remember much about the stories my mom read to me, but I remember the ones I chose to read. I spent many nights reading the original Grimm Brothers’ Fairy Tales. Anyone who has read these stories knows how gruesome they truly can be. However, most of the stories recorded by the Grimm Brothers keep a great deal of the graphic details to the reader’s imagination. There is one story that stuck with me for years and I still go back and reread. The story titled “Godfather Death” will always be my favorite. It is centered around a man who has many children, all of whom have godparents. However, the man’s last child does not have a godparent yet as there is no one in the village left who is willing to take on that responsibility. The man goes out in search of a godparent for his child and comes across God, the Devil, and Death. God offers to be the man’s godparent, but the man declines because God lets the rich get richer and poor get poorer. After, the Devil offers to be the child’s godparent and the man declines because the Devil tricks innocent people and damns them to Hell. Finally, the man comes upon Death and accepts his offer to be the godparent of his child because Death treats everyone as equal.

Absense
Her name is Tracy. She is fourteen years old in this picture. The picture in the heart-shaped locket on a gold-plated chain. Her long, brown hair is parted in the center and cinched up in two pigtails. Her big, brown eyes sparkle and the curl of her smile makes me wonder what mischief she is up to. I think as I walk through unfamiliar forests, will I recognize her if I find her, no, when I find her. How will she react when she sees me? I continuously practice what I will say to her as I tramp through fallen leaves and weave my way around twigs and branches and other detritus. I have little to steal: A bedroll, a knife, an air rifle and a few sundries that make the journey a bit less of an ordeal. The most valuable item is, of course, Tracy in a locket. My head throbs, has been since before I left. There was that week I was down sick and delirious, it scared me. So, I packed up and snuck out of the neighborhood, dodging patrols all along the way.
