I knew he’d received a hefty sum, but, given his paranoia, I assumed he wouldn’t cash a check that large. As it turned out, I was wrong. Nate must have thought our steel, padlocked shed was safer than the rickety town bank with its half-asleep teller.

After a long and arduous trek in uncharted Amazonian jungle territory, blindly following her directions in the hostile environment, their lot could finally feast their eyes on the sight before them. The Aeducan. The fabled pirate ship itself; said to have plundered countless empires throughout the ages, pillaging with no discrimination the ancient Greeks, the Persian Empire, the Romans, the Huns, and even the Egyptians during Cleopatra’s era. It seemed impossible then, but traces of the Aeducan were to be found everywhere in local legends and old wives’ tales; it still seemed impossible now, despite the evidence before them.

    Lucky Strike For a man with the nickname of Lucky, James Armstrong was anything but. He was born to a wealthy South Carolina family before the Civil War. He attended the finest schools and even attended West Point. But the War changed everything for him. The Battle of Chancellorsville cost him his left hand when his pistol backfired, ending his war with the pull of a trigger. But that was only the first of his travails as he arrived home to find nothing more than a burned out husk of his family plantation. A few weeks of searching later found his mother on her deathbed, devastated by Lucky's fathers death at the hands of the very slaves he had grown up around. With little more than the twenty dollars that represented the remainder of his family’s wealth, Lucky made his way west to make his own fortune. But James Armstrong found still more misfortune ahead of him.

  • The Soul Notebooks

    The Soul Notebooks (Inspired in part by the folk tale, “The Tinder Box,” by Hans Christian Andersen) I’d been driving my big rig all night and was looking for a place to pull over for a morning nap when I spotted a car smashed up against one of the giant saguaro cactuses that dominates this part of the Arizona desert. As I slowed down to get a better look, I saw an old woman in the driver’s seat struggling with her seat belt and grimacing in pain. I parked next to her and got out to see if I could help. She was clutching her arm and moaning while she continued to fiddle with the seat belt latch.

    At least once a week, I pass by a witches' hut on my way home from someplace. Or when I go out someplace. The reason why is in order to leave where I live at, you have to pass by a couple of homes. One of which being a witches' hut.

    The fat drops of rain pelted the leaves above Dylan’s head as he waited patiently in the shadows of the night. The soft yellow glow beaming from the window danced as the figures inside moved quickly. The father was grabbing his shoes and slipping them on his feet. The mother was dressing their kids in raincoats. Dylan could feel his heart in his throat, and the sweat accumulating on his palms was even noticeable in spite of the rain.He had been watching the family for weeks. Observing their every move from a distance. And still he was having doubts. Could he pull this off? He had to. His sister was counting on it.

  • The Devils Within

    It was late at night and I didn’t know where I was. In the pitch black darkness, I could only distinguish a doorknob. I was in probably in a room, but whose ? As far as I remember, my friends and I went to a club and started drinking. Rum, whisky and other hard liquors were being poured in my glass and all I could hear was : “One more shot”. It is hard to tell if I didn't want to deceive my friends or if I was a natural heavy drinker but in the end, it didn't matter. Shots after shots, one bottle after another, I could feel myself getting dizzy over the excitement of my friends. There were something in their eyes that kept me going; the thrill of the situation. I knew it was bad but I was enjoying it. My vision was blurred and I could hear the music playing from a distance; was I already drunk ? I don't know what I was but if I were to it again, I would without any second thoughts.

  • Confessions of a Witch's Daughter

    Dear diary, mother is at it again! She says this time she was done for real then five days later she returns to him. Nothing gets me more frustrated than being used for her plots of vengeance and solicitation of jealousy. She hasn’t even been back a day and she is already assembling her altar of terror. Last time she assembled the altar we had to destroy two sacred statues that were one of a kind and heirlooms. This time I don’t know what will happen. These altars have one purpose and one purpose only and that is to destroy her enemies. What she seems to forget is that you can’t fight fire with fire. When you mess with the spirit world you have to keep your promises! You have to deliver what you promise once they give you what you summoned them to do.

    When one seeks, one shall find, hmm, an interesting thought to have entered my psyche. I feel the sensation of raindrops touch the cells of my skin; wet, cold, silken, and beautiful. My breath seems to echo in vibration and the beating of my heart is amplified as I slowly become conscious of my surroundings.
