Louis Wagner was working alone, barely scratching out a living fishing the Maine and New Hampshire waters off the Isles of Shoals, when he had the good fortune to meet John Hontvet and his wife Maren. For two years John and Maren took a personal interest in seeing that Wagner was never in need of food or clothing, and even went so far as to include him in John’s prosperous fishing business.

Steam Engine Steve
There once was a man who used to live in an abandoned derelict warehouse by a lake. He was what many called a mad scientist which is why he lived alone in the middle of nowhere. He had never been a good man but living alone had driven him to become more and more of a monster. He plotted day after day how to punish all the people who had cast him out. He would sit by the lake scowling and muttering to himself. Writing in journal after journal trying to come up with both a weapon and method of transportation to bring pain upon his enemies.

An Interview with a 107 Year-Old Cowboy Vampire Detective
It was the middle of June, in 2006, and Hank Jasper almost didn't hear the Little Rock Police chief call his name. He obviously did, but for the first time in a while he had to actually turn his head to look at Jennifer Cole, the forty-three year old woman with blonde hair that she always had in a braid; the one that always hung over her left shoulder.

The Lake House Trip
Dean got out of his uber carrying his bag up to the lake house. It had been a very difficult year, what with the pandemic and all, and he was looking forward to getting away from his small apartment for a few days to stay at the company lake house. The lake house itself was a small reward offered to the salesperson of the month to go and visit for a week and enjoy the wonderful isolation in the mountains. He had worked hard through the year, mostly from boredom that came from working from home and getting out only when one absolutely had to. That said he was looking forward to spending his isolation in a much more open and robust place and the mountain air already was calming his senses. He went and typed in the code he had been given to enter the house and let himself in.

Myst Vantar
I have lived by a lake all my life. It's called Myst vatnar which means Myst lake in the Norse language. Apparently myst was a term for mystical or mystic long ago. At least that's what my father always told me. This lake was crystal clear all year long and even though we traveled occasionally and saw other lakes I never saw a lake so beautiful. Which is why every summer people from all over the world would come to vacation at it. You could swim, fish, and enjoy tanning on the lake or by it. But there was one rule that no matter what that seemed to always get broken. There were never to be more than five people in the lake at the same time.

The Girl in the Pond
There is a pond in the old pear orchard. Every year, it freezes over, and kids love to skate on it, making spirals and figure eights until the cold reaches through their leather skates and their thick wool socks and reaches their tiny toes, and tells them it’s time or hot cocoa cinnamon cookies.
