“Metabolism” is one of those terms that frequently comes up in discussions of weight loss and healthy living. While it can sometimes be a bit misunderstood, it’s almost always used relative to burning fat. Metabolism is, in the simplest terms, all the chemical processes that your body does to sustain life. This includes, but is not limited to, converting food to energy, breathing, circulation, repairing cells, and so on. People with a fast metabolism tend to have a higher BMR, which means their body burns more calories at rest, as they tend to carry greater amounts of muscle mass.

Getting quality sleep is also foundational to your metabolism because sleep can regulate hormones that control your cravings and utilisation of energy.

In summary, a fast metabolism can be helpful for burning fat, but it is just one piece of the puzzle. Sustainable fat loss takes more than just a fast metabolism. Sustainable fat loss comes down to smart habits around building muscle, maximising activity, nourishing your body, managing stress, getting enough sleep, and having proper hydration. With consistent action and just a dash of patience, you can improve your metabolic health and work toward your fat loss goals—regardless of where your journey begins.
