Four girls of the 1970s play by the rules

Abiding by the girl cod was not an option. It was a choice that others may not have understood.

Girl Code

Four teenage girls in the early 1970s, Marie, Celia, Cherrie, and Renee, abided by the girl code as they stuck together at a Saturday night party. They sat side by side in their chairs as the music played. How they loved to dance, especially when the "jam," the most popular song, was played.

But they did not move and waited patiently. After a while, one by one, they went to the dance floor over and over as teen boys asked them to dance. The evening ended on a high note for them all, but Renee had a secret.

Rob had given her his phone number and asked her to call, but she did not After three days without hearing from her, Rob got her number from a mutual friend. He reached Renee on Wednesday, and she agreed to go out with him. After that, she began reaching out to him as much as he pursued her.

The unspoken rule

Cherie had spent most of the evening of the dance with Junior, who was quiet and shy. She was still hurting about a recent breakup and did not have love on her mind. Junior was safe, and no mixed signals were given.

The following weekend, Rob came back to the neighborhood and went to Renee's house. His friend Mike was with him. Renee called Cherie and explained that she and Rob had been talking all week. She asked if Mike could hang out with her, and Cherie thought it could not hurt, so she said yes.

Cherie walked to Renee's, and Mike walked back to her house with her. As they were talking, she noticed how well put together his outfit was, and she loved his soft voice. Cherie knew she was falling for this guy, but needed to hear him tell her how he felt.

She wanted to kiss him and was thinking, "Why don't you kiss me"? As if he heard her, he did. It was a long, passionate kiss, and Cherie knew she was in love but did not say anything. The following night, as they talked on the phone, she kept thinking, "I love you," Please tell me you love me too."

Standing on the principle

The following day, Mike called again and, as he was talking, Cherie was thinking, "I love you," Please won't you tell me you love me too?" Again, as if he read her thoughts, he said, "Cherie, I love you," and she responded, "I love you too".Finally, the words had been spoken.

Cherie also wanted to take Mike to the next school dance, but did not ask him. She knew she would not go without a date but did nto reveal that to him. Instead, she mentioned that the dance was coming up in a few weeks.

He asked if she were going, and she replied that she had not thought about it. A few days later, Mike asked if she would like him to take her to the dance, and she said yes.

Abiding by the code

Celia had met John at the party, but she did not give him her phone number. She found his number in the phone book but did not call him. Instead, she asked Renee to tell Rob that she was interested. Rob gave Renee John's phone number to give to Celia.

She pretended she had not looked it up in the phone book. Thankfully, Renee had given Rob Celia's number, and he gave it to John, who finally called after two weeks.

Unspoken

Maria had been dating Barry for close to six months. The night of the party, she made a decision. He was "the one," and she shared this with Cherie, but she did not tell Barry.

Finally, one day, when they were alone at her house, things began to get heated. Everything in her desired to scream out how much she wanted him, but she refrained. Eventually, he pulled away from her and asked, "Can I," and she responded yes.

Dancing, phone calls, the first kiss, dates, and the first time making love. These four teenage girls followed the unwritten rule of their day in their world. Everyone knew it but did not speak on it.
