Life With My Furry Friends
Pet Enrich Our Lives
“Other dogs may do their jobs in their own unique and perfectly wonderful ways, but there will always be that dog that no dog will replace, the dog that will make you cry even when it's been gone for more years than it could ever have lived.” Meghan Daum
If I didn’t share my life with a pet, my life would look drastically different. I wouldn't have dog toys scattered throughout the house. Her hair would not be on every surface. I could sit in my chair alone and not have to contort myself to suit the dog, taking up an awkward position. When I think about life without Sophie, I consider all the inconveniences which come from sharing my life with a pet, and they are minor when I consider life without her. Owning a pet has many benefits.
“Many of the qualities that come so effortlessly to dogs - loyalty, devotion, selflessness, unflagging optimism, unqualified love - can be elusive to humans.” John Grogan
Mental Health
Studies have shown owning a pet has a positive impact, especially for those who live alone, such as older adults and disabled individuals. Having a pet to care for gives meaning and structure to life. If you live alone, having a pet provides companionship and affection. Those who own pets feel needed and wanted. They have a reason to get out of bed in the morning. Pets can alleviate depression and anxiety. Interacting with a pet can lower cortisol levels and blood pressure. One study showed pet owners are at lower risk of stroke because of being more relaxed. Taking their dogs for walks and outings motivates dog owners to be more active.
“Pets are humanizing. They remind us we have an obligation and responsibility to preserve and nurture and care for all life.” James Cromwell
Protection
Animals, especially dogs, can provide protection and alarm presence for property and family. Dogs bond closely to their owners and this motivates them to keep the ones they love safe. Large dogs such as German Shepherds, Rottweilers, and Dobermans can present a formidable challenge to criminals. Even small or medium-sized dogs can be effective in raising an alarm. Burglars cannot determine the size of a dog solely based on the volume of their bark. Just the presence of a dog can deter burglars. The dog's presence eliminates the criminal's element of surprise.
Dogs are the only creature who will give their lives for those they protect without a second thought. While they are a part of our lives, we are their whole lives. They have no social life beyond their owners. .
“Owners of dogs will have noticed that, if you provide them with food and water and shelter and affection, they will think you are God.” Christopher Hitchens
Science shows the multiple positive effects pets can have on the health of their owners. Pet owners reap benefits to their mental and physical health.Studies have shown children exposed to animals early have less pet allergies. They give our lives structure and purpose. They encourage us to be active and social. We rely on them for companionship and protection. In return for food and shelter, animals give those who care for them security, affection and offer company when we would otherwise be alone. One cannot calculate a treasured pet's worth.
“I think dogs are the most amazing creatures; they give unconditional love. For me, they are the role model for being alive.” Gilda Radner
