My Inktober Journey
Every year, as October approached, I'd see posts about Inktober, I'd see signs in art stores, and I was always curious about it, never daring to participate myself. "I'm not good enough", I'd tell myself. "I have nothing to contribute", "I'm all about digital media, I'm just a graphic designer". Those were all thoughts that crossed my mind every year as October slowly came crawling around the corner. I always liked October for many reasons: fall colors, rainy days, crispy cool days... but now I have one more thing to add to my list of why I love October: Inktober. The concept itself is wonderful: encouraging artists of all levels to draw one thing every day, with prompts (sometimes quite challenging to get them to work with one's ideas) to help them get going. I love the idea. Truth be told, I probably would've never done it if I hadn't challenged myself the month before to illustrate one animal a day. I did this together with another fantastic illustrator in Germany, Booboo Tannenbaum (@booboo_tannenbaum on IG, check her out!), who illustrated one Berlin dog a day. We kept each other accountable, and that helped me be strict and do this daily. Inktober came around and I knew I was ready, though I didn't feel as confident with my "analogous" hands as I did with my "extended hand", the iPad and Apple pencil. So, putting my fears aside, I went for it, and I enjoyed every moment. I admit, there were days that I found it hard, and days when the ideas weren't coming forth so easily, but I did it anyway. Like clockwork, every evening, with the TV on, I'd sit on the couch and create a new illustration. Why the TV? I have always enjoyed working with background noise, that is, if the work permits it, like when I draw, illustrate, doodle, or do anything that just allows my mind to not think too hard about what I'm doing. Maybe that's also a reason why I do it, my mind doesn't get in the way, with annoying thoughts of impossibility and negativity.

Cosmic Balances In Myth
The King Arthur myths and legends are a prime example of the heroic journey. His call to adventure is some myths that start when he pulls Excalibur from a stone. It proves to be his call to adventure because he is the only one who can do it, the only one worthy of the sword because he is the son of Uther. He is the rightful king of England and only he can rule. His mentor and supernatural aid comes in the form of Merlin the druid, the Lady of the lake and his sword Excalibur. Merlin is often tied to magic and seen as a wise man in most stories and tellings with great power who educates Arthur sometimes by turning him into animals, in other tellings he is the one who created the sword Excalibur another item that in some sources seems magical or has magical properties, one being that only Arthur and can use the sword. And the Lady of the lake who in some cases also holds onto the sword for Arthur can give it to him so long as he is near some body of water, so long as he is close to a source of water he can summon the sword thanks to her help. Then you have his knights such as Percival, Lancelot, and Gawain to name a few. They are his allies in his journey, each providing some form of help to him and his cause, whether it is Percival and his strength or Gawain with his humanity. They help him along his journey and fight for him and his kingdom. Now during the time in which this story would have been originally told in an oral tradition it was during the Saxon migration from Germania to the British Isles and perhaps during the Viking age in which England was divided and didnt have a single king. This myth of a great warrior king who ruled over all England would have been seen as a rallying call, a way to unite the people against a single threat. But the moral and philosophical purpose of this myth is that all of England can be united under one banner no matter what boundaries exist and when times are at their darkest a ray of light shines through.

Art as a Lifestyle.
This week has been one of the hardest and the most rewarding of my teaching life! I’ve had kids screaming and crying, as one would since I teach grades kindergarten through sixth* grade in my classroom every day. However, I’ve also had kids (miraculously!) learning to listen this week, sharing politely with each other, and expressing themselves more through their art in ways that I haven’t seen up to this point. As a teacher, that is what I like to see! I want to find kids who are using their words and their actions in a kind manner. I always challenge them to get out of their box whenever they are attempting artistry in my class. but as an art teacher it especially makes me proud that these kids are making an extra effort to try things that don’t come naturally to them. That takes true courage and I’ve definitely seen that come out in conversations and finished projects. Every day is another moment to learn.
