The last days of Alaska & ...Chad!
Alaska can be absolutely stunning in all weather conditions though towards the end of the season the weather can turn to absolute shit with constant freezing rain, rough seas and dim misery every day you step ashore. As great as this team and ship was, everyone always seems to get burnt out by the end of the contract and adding in good friends leaving every few weeks with general fatigue you begin to crave normal land life. Despite the burnout many of the team would be finishing up their contract in a few weeks in Seattle and there was a bit of resentment that after a whole Alaska season (and the same 4 ports) for almost 6 months we were all going to miss out on this amazing month long cruise from Los Angeles to Sydney, Australia. I think it was only the two assistant managers JP & Lara who would be staying a little longer and bar a few new faces at least half the team was due to leave in a few weeks. Like I said it was mixed as some of us (at 8 months onboard already myself) were done and ready to go while others really wanted to see do the month cruise to Australia.

A lengthy lunch in Moscow
For five weeks during the summer of 1977 I was in Moscow, working at the British Embassy (see photo) to set up a library within the Cultural Section. This proved to be a fascinating time, not least for the string of distinguished visitors who came and went. I once made a cup of tea for the architect Sir Hugh Casson and on another occasion shook hands with the Foreign Secretary at that time, who was David Owen.

Dangerous Waters
It was the dawn of a new day and I was gathering my things together as I was officially on vacation. I have been working for the past 3 years non-stop and my goal was to leave everything behind and head to a bed and breakfast room I rented for the week. It was a 8 hour drive, but I was game. I really needed to recharge my batteries and looked forward to a new adventure.

July 4th Happy Independence Day I wake up on the couch but Shawn and Anna are asleep so I decide to go back to bed. When I do see Shawn and Anna getting up I guess it's time to start the day even though I don't want to get out of the fluffy awesomeness of this couch.
