One Day
I hope that one day I'll work up the courage to be able tell you how much you mean to me, how much you've shaped me into the person I am today. I could tell by the way mom talks about you to me that she knows our bond is close to non-existent. She mentions to me that if she were to pass before you, she pleads for me to give you a call every once in a while, take you out to eat, or to spend some time with you doing your favorite hobbies. She's worried because she senses that our family will be without one another when she is no longer here due to our emotional disconnect and detachment, and our language barrier.

Dad
Dear dad, I tried so hard to get you to be part of my life. The moment that you and my mom split up, it was like you weren't a parent anymore. At least, not mine. I have always wanted to know why? Why did you not want to be part of my life? Why was it so easy for you to just throw me away?

The Bluest Collar and the Biggest Heart
My father built houses, but never for black people. It started as a roofing and siding business. It was hard, big work in a soft, small town. My two brothers and I always had what we needed, and we knew better than to want more. The only thing I wanted was to stop hearing the n-word at dinner.

Time, Date, Temp
5:58 pm, Friday, June 12, 2020. 74.3 degrees inside. 80 something outside. I sit in bed and stare at “The Classic Cars of the Fifties” mounted on the wall at the foot of the bed. Each one on its shelf that's shared by two others. All twelve portray a different world, a different time. My favorite is the third to the right on the third shelf down. Don’t know what it is, but it is smaller with a white top that looks like it may be a convertible and the body is a pretty sky-blue color. I would get up to see what make and model it is, but I don’t feel like it. Hmm – guess I am depressed. OK, so I’ll keep writing. To the right of the “Classic Cars of the Fifties” are the “Classic Cars of the 60’s”. Funny, “Fifties” is spelled out, and “’60s” is written in number form. Here again, each car sits on its shelf next to two others. These are all lower to the ground and not as ornate.

The Sculptor of Identity: A Chronicle of Paternal Influence
Life is a fascinating mosaic, pieced together by experiences, relationships, and the lessons they yield. In my life’s panorama, my father’s role has been as a chisel, meticulously sculpting my identity with patient and loving strokes. The story of who I am today is incomplete without acknowledging how my father, my primary male role model, has influenced my personal and intellectual growth.

Growing up as a daddy's girl, I have always been aware of the extraordinary bond my father and I share.
