The Card in the Dustbin: A Missed Chance That Could've Changed Everything
A powerful short story about hesitation, lost opportunity, and the fear that holds us back.

Some chances come quietly — on a visiting card, in a conversation, or in the blink of a moment. The real question is: will you take the leap?
Once upon a time, in a quiet little town, there lived a man named Rohit. He worked at a small petrol pump, earning just enough to survive. But inside, he carried big dreams — he wanted to be rich, live in a big house, and drive his dream car: a sleek black Mercedes-Benz.
But life had other plans.
Every day, he filled petrol in expensive cars — the same ones he could only dream of owning. He smiled at customers politely, but deep down, he was hungry — for more success, more meaning, more life.
Then one day, his heart skipped a beat.
A shiny black Mercedes-Benz rolled up to the pump. Rohit’s eyes widened. “It’s my dream car,” he whispered.
A well-dressed man stepped out and said, “Petrol for 2,000 rupees, please.”
As Rohit fueled the car, he kept staring — not just at the car, but at the life it represented. The man noticed.
With a gentle smile, he asked, “What are you thinking, young man?”
Rohit hesitated, then confessed, “Sir… this is my dream car. I want to become successful one day. I want a life like this.”
The man looked at him kindly, pulled out a visiting card from his wallet, and handed it to him.
“This is my office address. Come tomorrow. I’ll teach you about business. If you're willing to work hard, maybe someday you’ll drive your own Mercedes.”
And just like that, he drove off.
Rohit stared at the card for a long time. His heart was racing — Was this real? What if it’s a scam? What if I fail?
Doubt crept in. Fear followed.
And then... he threw the card into the dustbin.
Three years passed.
Rohit was still at the petrol pump. Still dreaming. Still filling tanks.
One day, another black Mercedes stopped at the pump. A different man stepped out — confident, successful, glowing with pride.
“Petrol for 2,000 rupees, please,” he said.
Rohit admired the car again — just like before. But then the man said something that made Rohit freeze.
“Do you remember three years ago, someone gave you a visiting card at this very pump?”
Rohit’s eyes widened. “Yes… but how do you know?”
The man smiled gently. “Because I was working here too. I was a cleaner. I overheard your conversation. After you left, I picked up the card you threw away.”
Rohit’s heart dropped.
“I called him,” the man continued. “Met him. Learned about business. Worked hard. And now… this Mercedes is mine.”
He looked into Rohit’s eyes and said softly, “I wish you had just given it a try. That one moment could have changed your entire life.”
And then he drove away.
Some opportunities only knock once.
Not everyone fails because of a lack of chances — most fail because of fear, doubt, and hesitation.
What if I’m not good enough? What if it’s a trap? What if I fail?
These questions are the true thieves of dreams.
So next time life hands you a card — don’t throw it away.
Explore it. Embrace it. You never know... the next Mercedes could be yours.
