The Ranch
Business had not been good lately, Lina thought to herself as she worked. Clients were scarce, the weather was unpleasant, and it was becoming more and more challenging to make ends meet. She was dreading the upcoming meeting with a financial advisor at the bank that she could only afford because he was an old family friend. She hated that money was always at the forefront of her mind these days. In the past, it seemed to flow in without much trouble. She wasn’t sure what had changed, or how to fix it. As much as she loved her ranch, Lina was worried that it just wasn’t sustainable at this point to keep it up and running. Things needed to turn around very soon to have a chance at staying afloat. The ranch had been in her family for five generations, and she had long dreamed of running it herself. It was all she had ever wanted and all she knew. It would be heartbreaking to be the one responsible for shutting it down and selling it off in pieces.

I Don't Care If Your Pet Cemetery IS Fortune 500-listed, I STILL Want to Speak with the Manager!
Maggie, our pet barn owl, was my best friend. I was sure she would be fine in the den while I cleaned her cage. I shrieked in horror when I saw the brown feathers wafting from our newly-purchased 600-horsepower Roomba.

Going, going, gone
I met Barnabus when he was still a fledgeling learning to flap his wings. He was just a couple of months old. In human year's I wasn't much older, I still had no body hair, not like Tyler. What a difference four years made, Ty at 16 was already contemplating shaving. I was still being mesmerized by a young barn owl.

Bright Feathers
Asia Helmeted Hornbills are birds that stand out from the rest with their elongated yellow beaks, wrinkly throat patches, and a massive casque on the top of their heads that make them look like they are wearing helmets. These birds make their homes in the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Borneo, Thailand and Myanmar. Their diet includes strangler figs. Unfortunately, these birds are victims of hunting due to poachers killing them for their casques to make jewelry and ornaments.

My First Owl
I never really thought much about being a wizard – it just happened. I suppose that I was a wizard from the moment I was born. I’m not sure. One day I was mindlessly playing in the living room and Mom hollered in, “OK, time to clean up for lunch.” And, the next thing I knew, all the toys and games were put away neatly back in the box, my hands were washed and I was sitting at the table, ready to eat another hearty meal of her favorite dish – liver and onions. I was as surprised as anyone that it had all happened. That was the first time I realized consciously, that I could do things like that - you know, have a big affect on the world.

Hamilton, the Amazing Hummingbird
Hamilton’s wings thrummed. He buzzed like a bumblebee as he hovered over a field of hot-pink petunias. But those flowers weren’t the only ones. Indeed, people grew various colors of the sweet flowers on a vast meadow – all solely for Hamilton’s pleasure. For one thing, this ruby-throated bird acted like he was the only hummingbird. He preferred being antisocial except when mating. Moreover, his small, five-gram body (less than 1 ounce) possessed many magical, hidden powers! Hamilton knew he was the most iridescent pugilist of all the other birds that winged about him.

What a Cockatiel Teaches Me About Life, Love, and Neediness. Top Story - November 2021.
My white-faced cockatiel Boobear has turned 25, and he’s still going strong. The normal life expectancy of these small domestic parrots is roughly 15 to 25 years, but some senior birds live into their thirties. I have high hopes this chubby little character will do the same.

Healthy Parrots: Diet, Nutrition, and Health
Sharing a meal with your bird may be a wonderful experience, and it can also be beneficial to your pet's health. Many bird diets are deficient in critical vitamins and minerals that birds require, resulting in a variety of health problems.

Guacamaya
I was one of the ones who found the birds. Hours, days, weeks spent trudging through wretched Honduran tropical forests. Too long getting sucked dry by mosquitoes, hacking through shrubs and vinery, and the occasional close call with venomous snakes. Coiled tightly around themselves under large leaves or wrapped around thick tree branches. They were everywhere.

An Uneasy Truce
The dense forest swallowed me. The blanket of the tree canopy above blocked even the smallest sliver of light from the full moon. The dark, damp soil pounding beneath my poorly clad feet consumed my legs and feet so much, that I feared I might forever become a part of the forest. The battle between man and nature would continue in another de-evolution from body to dirt.
