Maximus: Peak Feline Energy
Today I want to write about an animal who was very dear to my heart, a lovely feline by the name of Maximus. I found him, you see, abandoned in a cardboard box on the side of the road one night when I was walking home from a friend’s house. My mum, of course, would never have let me adopt a pet randomly, but when I told her that I’d found him all alone in a box, left to die potentially, her heart melted and from then on he had a place in our home. I loved him, and he loved me, but I never could compete for his affections with my sister Jessika.

It Was He Who Rescued Me
Most people are honest when they rescue a stray. But...not many say that their stray actually rescued them. That was exactly the case with Billy. But...I feel like I am getting ahead of myself. Let me take you back to when this sad...yet comforting story began.

Leading from the Brink
On an early November evening, the weather had begun its shift to the wrong side of the thermometer. Our prior attempts to hire for this position had come up short. We had been through dozens of applications, toured multiple facilities and been outbid by a couple of other employers where we felt we had found our dream candidate. Our search committee had grown weary, like we had been looking at the same type of candidates, with the same type of experience, and the same background. We were about to put our search on hold when our HR Manager stumbled upon a pair of dark horse candidates.

The Magnificence of the Evil Duchess
I don't know how the rest of you get your pets, but they have always just sort of 'happened' for me. A cat will wander into my house and suddenly I have a cat named Koby. I see a dog hurt on the side of the road and next thing I know Indiana Jane (who turned out to be a wolf) is following me around the house. I hear a cat screaming while being thrown around by some kids and before I know it I have a screaming cat in my car. I see Guinea Pigs being abused in a classroom and I am suddenly the proud owner of Brave Sir Robin and Pfeffernusse.

Healing with Willow
Healing with Willow As our cats become elderly, they gravitate closer to me. Our sweet, sixteen-year-old cat, Willow has become not only my work buddy, but one of my healers. I think it must be my witchy energy that has drawn the elderly felines to my side. They sense that I have the power to navigate the darkness in a way that not everyone does. That, when it is their time, I can help them embrace that darkness. Much like when my mom was dying, it feels as though I am a midwife—only instead of helping a soul be born into the world, I am helping a soul transition out of it. Luckily, unlike with my mom, I have had the honor of seeing Willow age slowly. Those who have lost any loved one young or prematurely knows what a gift that is.

My Assistants
Every time I sit at my desk to write, I always was joined by my cat Suze. She tried to get my attention by pawing at my hand to pet her or stepping on my keyboard most of the time. As distracting as she could be, she amused me, and I was grateful for our routine.

A Feral Friendship. Third Place in EmPAWyee of the Month Challenge. Top Story - September 2021.
Years ago, if anyone was to tell me I’d grow up to be a crazy cat lady, I would have laughed in their face. My family is a dog family. Plain and simple. Sure, as a kid I would always go out of my way to capture neighborhood strays and try to convince my Dad to let me keep them, but the answer was always a firm “no.”
