Dear moon

I don’t usually stare at the moon.

This time it was for me.

It wasn’t for the moon.

Although I understood it.

I understood the loneliness it felt.

Being so far away from the sun.

Perhaps, the sun was its home.

The sun shined so bright sometimes it couldn’t see its people.

I understood the moon, its lingering and invisible feeling.

It wasn’t as bright as the sun and its purpose wasn’t clear.

Yet, at nighttime it was brighter than the distant stars.

It didn’t always have a purpose but when it was dark it did.

It shined through the darkness.

Perhaps. That was its purpose.

I thought to myself I understood the moon.

Although, my light doesn’t always shine the brightest for some.

When it matters, when it gets really heavy then that is when I’m needed, I thought.

I understood the moon, It’s like me.

The moon did know its purpose.

Sometimes it didn’t shine bright through the darkness.

But tonight it didn’t hide.

It shined so bright I could feel it coming to life.

The more I looked at the moon, the more I saw me.

The more I came to life again.

I think the moon did too.

I suddenly felt. Less alone that night.

It just me and you, I thought toward the moon.

My eyes started to tear up and I thought what it even means to shine through the darkness.

Why do I have such a hard task, what’s wrong with us moon.

Why are we this way.

In an instant I heard an owl hoot.

An owl is known to whisper through the night.

Why would this creature do that, I asked the moon.

With a whispering cry it said its to be wise.

The more darkness you endure and change into the light the wiser you become.

Wow, what a beautiful thought I told the moon.

It is not a thought but a truth for me and you.

Suddenly, I felt less alone with the moon.

For once in my life, I felt special.

I took one more look at the owl as it flew off.

I then thought what a courageous thing to do to swift through the night without a hoot.

I loved the moons wiseness but the courage the owl had was something I wanted to endure

now.

I thanked the moon for seeing me.

I waved at the owl for showing me courage.

I decided to rest my eyes.

When the sun began to shine.

I thought I’d rather sit through the night.

However. I wasn’t sad anymore.

I waved at the sun for being what it is.

I missed the moon.

Suddenly, I began to cry.

The day went by.

I felt a longing for the night.

When it struck that time, I waited for the moon.

This time he wasn’t all the way there.

He was halfway showing himself, and I thought he must not feel good.

So, I asked him why he was sad this time.

Once again, he was wise, he said the darkness is hard to shine through sometimes.

I’m always learning how to shine through it.

That is the beauty of being lonely in the night.

The sun always knows how to shine and that can get boring.

So, they go away and let the darkness come inside.

But us, we never let it win.

We are wise and resilient.

We always shine as bright as we can.

However, tonight I feel a bit tired from yesterday.

Afterall I’m only one moon.

I should let you shine for someone else who needs it tonight.

    Beautiful piece!

  • There really is something special about the moon.

  • Truly lovely. A sweet depiction of both a shared moon and self. Loved this!

The gentle first-person tone creates such intimacy. It feels as though we are right beside you, listening to the moon’s wisdom and feeling that shared ache of solitude.

how did you do that? the tale feels like an old wise story. And the truth behind "the more darkness you endure" that's my favorite. Felt like I had just discovered something new inside, a do you now understand moment. Applause to the wise.
